The gentle wind was far too calm for this night. It ought to have poured, cliché as that may seem. Her raven hair fluttered as she sang her lullaby. Her vocals could make any man fall to their knees, or any child fall asleep.
Though it didn't seem possible, her voice sounded more graceful when she was crying. Her voice, dripping with sorrow, filled the entire space.
Outside the sorrowful room was the ruler, the king. Listening to her song, he also fell into sorrow. He had everything, but failed when it came to his family. He couldn't even protect his deceased son or comfort his wife's grief.
They were both overcome with melancholy. Their child, "their bringer of light," was no longer with them.
The wizard listening to harmonic sorrow decided to stop prying and show herself. The wizard sat atop the balcony rail and added to the song.
The wife was shocked but continued, changing her lyrics to a question. "Who are you?"
With a flick of the wrist, the wizard opened the door, revealing the king. The wife started hiccuping, and the singing ended.
"I overheard you both," the wizard hummed. "I couldn't help but want to see the cause of your sadness." The wizard pondered a bit. Then muttered, "If you want, I can bring him back to life."
The king rushed toward the two. "What do you mean?" he mumbled. "Explain further."
"I meant what I said."
The wife's hiccups came to an end, and her swollen eyes had a glimmer of hope.
"Please tell me." She grabbed both of my hands. "I'll even give up my life."
Her husband faced her. "What are you saying?" he cried out.
As he clutched the wife's arm, the wizard spoke, "Now, Now." She exhaled, "No one is giving up their life here."
"What's the catch?" The king asked in suspicion.
The wizard mumbled, "Well-"
"Hah. I knew it—there's something. Spill it." The king quips.
The wizard coughed, thinking of a way to explain it. "I can bring the child back to life. But his soul would have already lived many lives.
She continued, "He would not have the thoughts of a child, making him seem very mature." She reassured, "He would still be your child, of course."
"A transmigrator?" they murmured.
"Yes, but we would be going against the natural order and flow and perhaps disturbing the gods," she mentioned.
"Do you want to take that risk?" she asked.
The wife answered immediately. "We do-"
"Let's do it." The kings answered with certainty.
The wizard grinned, her first mission. A tall order, especially coming from the royal family.
"His name?" The wizard asked.
The wife looked at her husband. "Lucas." Her hands trembled, "Please bring him back."
"It'll take me a week or more. Please wait for me and your light," she smiled.
Her hood fell down, revealing her golden hair. She exited as effortlessly as she had entered and vanished into the night.
-
She had found herself in a different world, to look for this bringer of light.
