Chapter one: Suzie, Do You Copy?

JUNE 28, 1985

Summer. No school. Hot and lots of ice cream. Summer in Hawkins was always hot. The temperatures went up, and everybody always seemed to be a little happier.

Phoebe was happy but not because of the weather. She just doesn't like summer. It has its pros and cons, no school but then they're the sweating. She prefers fall and winter over sunny days.

Max and Phoebe over the last six or so months had been living in a honeymoon phase. They met up almost every day, whether it was with friends or alone, and kissed a lot. It was constant. Phoebe would ask Max on date nights and Max would too. They listened to music, watched movies, and just talked, and they loved it.

They did keep their deal on Halloween. Max has been teaching Phoebe how to ride a skateboard and Phoebe has been teaching Max how to draw.

Max knows about Phoebe's powers, and how she ended up time-traveling. Phoebe was scared to tell Max but it turned out it was the best thing that could have happened to her. Max wasn't scared of her in fact she admires Phoebe.

Phoebe had barely gotten to spend any time with Steve since he got a job at Scoops Ahoy in the new Starcourt Mall. She was happy for him because one of the benefits of his job is he gave Phoebe free ice cream but only Phoebe, sometimes Max, which annoyed the rest of the party.

Today Max and Phoebe are going to see a movie with Lucas, Will, and Mike.

Eight thirty came and Max, Phoebe, Lucas, and Will were waiting outside the starcourt mall for a certain boy named Mike Wheeler. This wasn't unusual for the group used to Mike being late due to eleven.

"Finally!" Pheobe crossed her arms as Mike pulled up fifteen minutes late. "You're late," Lucas said as he stood next to her

"Sorry!" Mike apologized quickly, although it lacked true meaning.

"We're gonna miss the opening again," Will said as they all began to walk fast through the mall. "Yeah if you guys keep whining about it, let's go" Mike called out as he lead the group.

"If you guys keep whining about it" Lucas mocked him. "Just please stop talking dude," Mike said annoyed "Let me guess you were busy" Lucas teased as he made kissy faces as Phoebe rolled her eyes

"Oh, real mature Lucas" Mike rolled his eyes as Phoebe patted his shoulder. "It's ok Mike, at least one of us understands," Phoebe glared at Lucas but he just ignored it as they started heading down the busy stairs to get to the lower floor.

"Yeah, totally," Max agreed with her girlfriend as she took her hand, making Phoebe smile. Phoebe didn't care if they held hands in public, it can be a friendly way of showing that their friends.

But that's only when they are in public. Both of them know that people are not okay with girls and girls dating so they keep it a secret unless they hold each other's hands.

"Oh El, I wish we could make out forever and never hang out with our friends" Lucas began to mock again.

"Lucas stop," Max said to him

"Will thinks it's funny," Lucas said as he nodded toward Will who laughed "Because it is" Will agreed.

"Oh yeah, it's so funny that I wanna spend romantic time with my girlfriend," Mike said to them sarcastically as he bumped into a girl, "sorry!"

"Excuse us, sorry," the group all said as they ran down the escalator toward the bottom "Watch it" an older girl sassed as Mike bumped into her.

"I'm spending romantic time with my girlfriend," Max smiled, kissing Phoebe on the cheek and making the girl blush. Phoebe looked at Max with eyes full of love, everything Max does just makes her fall more in love with her if that's even possible.

"Yeah watch it nerd," Lucas's little sister Erica said as she looked at the group from a table with her friends "Isn't it past your bedtime?" Lucas rolled his eyes toward her "Isn't it time you died?" Erica said causing Phoebe to hold back her laugh as Max slapped her arm slightly.

"Psycho," Lucas said with wide eyes.

"Butthead!" Erica shouted back.

"Mallrat" Lucas kept on.

"Fart face!" Erica yelled as Lucas just made a sound with his mouth.

"And I thought Erica was the kid," Phoebe said to him.

"Real mature" Max rolled her eyes as the two girls pushed Lucas along with them. As they made their way into the ice cream parlor Mike rang the small bell many times.

"Hey dingus your children are here" Robin called out as Steve swung the window open.

"Again? Seriously?" Steve asked them while they all just gave him a look and lead them to a door.

"Phoebe! Catch" Robin called out as she tossed Phoebe a backpack full of snacks for the group

"Thanks, you're the best!" Phoebe called out to her as she handed Will the bag so he can carry it. "See Lucas we made it" Mike whispered to Lucas as they got their seats.

"We missed the previews" Lucas argued back. "Still made it, fartface" Max teased while Phoebe couldn't help but smirk while Will passed them snacks from the bag.

The movie began to play as the group all watched intensely. They had been planning on coming to see Day Of The Dead since the previous came out a couple of months back. Just as it started to get good again, the projector went out people in the theatre started to get rowdy and shouted as if the people running it had caused the power cut.

Even the group all made noises of annoyance, but not her as goosebumps appeared on her arms, and chills went up her spine to her neck. She looked down at her watch to see it move faster than usual, a lot faster.

"Hey, everything okay?" Max asked as she looked at Phoebe worried.

"Yeah, yeah just cold" Phoebe quickly made an excuse, lying to Max once again.

Max gave her a small smile before looking around, making sure no one was looking before she grabbed Phoebe's hand interlocking it with hers. Making Phoebe more at ease.

After a few minutes, the projector started up again and everyone cheered loudly, as did Phoebe before she shut her eyes, and took a breath.
