Sequoia was completely and utterly lost; Lost in the middle of a dense sea of tall oak and pine trees, running for her life. Each breath that she took hurt like hell, but she still forced herself to keep running. She knew one thing for sure, if she stopped even for a moment, she was going to end up dead.
Her boyfriend, Myles Wade, had only moments ago attempted to do just that: kill her. She was currently sporting the products of his drug and alcoholic fueled rage: A bloody and swollen eye, a split and bleeding bottom lip, on top of the multiple bruises to her jaw, wrists, forearms and abdomen, which he had punched several times during his vicious assault.
They were clearly visible as ugly looking black, purplish colored marks all over her body. Sequoia never thought that she would ever become a victim of such brutality in a relationship and especially not from him. Never in her wildest dreams did she believe that the man she loved or rather thought she loved would ever raise his hand to her in anger. But Myles did.
She should have recognized all the signs earlier in their relationship that Myles was prone to violence but as the saying goes, love really does make a person blind. She had been so blinded by her affections for Myles that she didn't allow or rather wouldn't allow herself to see all the warning signs that had been there from the very start. But instead of walking away and ending the relationship, as any normal person would have done in that type of situation, she had instead decided to stay.
Sequoia would often think that maybe it was her fault. Maybe it was something she may have said or had done that made him so angry. Perhaps if she hadn't, maybe then he wouldn't beat her anymore. But this was a false hope, a complete and utter fallacy on her part, as the beatings kept on coming and eventually got worst. She hid her internal pain, just like she did when she covered up her bruises with long sleeve shirts. Sequoia always prayed that maybe one day, only one, that she would find a way to finally escape Myles's brutality for good.
This morning, however, Myles's behavior had been like night and day, which Sequoia admitted had totally terrified her. Myles had woken her up with a huge kiss, something she was definitely not used to receiving from him. Myles was never that affectionate, well not like he used to be when they initially started dating. So, it wasn't surprising for her to recoil back in fear, like she had when he did this, believing that he was going to punch or smack her.
What surprised Sequoia even further was the fact that he even cooked her breakfast instead of waiting for her to make it for him, which according to him was a "woman's job". Myles, a self-confessed chauvinist, thought all housework was a woman's job and made it very clear to her every day that they had lived together. But it only took Sequoia a moment to realize why Myles was in such happy spirits, as she got ready that morning for school and it definitely wasn't because of her.
Myles just so happened to be Red Moon University's star quarterback, and the football team was set to play an important championship qualifying game against a rival school called Devil's Glen that night. And this sudden change from Myles's 'normal' behavior, completely left Sequoia puzzled, given what had happened three weeks prior.

Three weeks ago....
Sequoia had a huge fight with Myles all because Anderson Newman, her study partner from one of her classes, had called asking to borrow her class notes. Anderson had been out sick that day and wanted to catch up on an important class lecture their professor had given that morning. Unfortunately, his phone call couldn't have come at a worst time, as Sequoia and Myles had just sat down to eat dinner. As a rule, at dinner time, all cells were normally turned off or for that matter, placed on silent. Myles had demanded this many times in the past and according to him, it was non-negotiable.
