happy december 23rd! sorry for not posting in three weeks that's on me 🤚

Christmastime feels different now that he is older.

Adulthood has brought on responsibilities that he never had as a child, and it seems that part of growing up has been to finally realize all the stress that comes with preparing for the holidays. There are gifts to be carefully thought out and purchased, decorations to be put up, a whole tree to be carried inside, and intricate dinner plans to be made with his family.

Looking back, he realizes that as a kid, it felt like everything happened by magic. The tree, the wreaths, the pretty lights that dotted the tree in the yard, the sugary cookies, the stockings that were filled by Christmas morning...

As if it all just floated into place on its own, surrounded by sparkles and an air of something miraculous.

It was all his parents' doing, of course, he gets that now. Well, some part of him has probably always known, even when he was a kid. The idea of Christmas magic was just a lot easier to believe in back then, he supposes. But all of that has sort of disappeared over the years – the magic and his belief in it.

And he would be lying if he said he doesn't miss it. The feeling that comes with Christmas is something so special that Dream is certain only kids are really able to feel it in its entirety. Adults sort of just... dull it out. So yes, Dream misses the magic, even if it was never real in the first place.

All that being said, growing up has been good to him, too.

Dream has his own house now, and his own people to celebrate with. His own little chosen family that he loves more than he ever thought he could love anything ever. George and Sapnap – his people. And it feels good like this, it feels complete, even if it makes for a Christmas that is very different from when he was younger.

Because George and Sapnap know him. Somehow, they understand Dream's half-conflicted feelings toward the holidays without him ever mentioning it to them explicitly. They allow him to tune into his younger self's excitement about gifts and Santa and all the rest, and Dream could not be more thankful for them.

In a way, they bring the magic back.

...

Getting the tree inside the house was a hassle, but they made it fun. Dream and Sapnap did most of the heavy lifting while George guided them through to the living room like an aircraft marshal. It took a big push from Dream to get the tall tree to stand upright in its little stand, and that was that.

George then proceeded to take the lead on the decorating, which Dream was all too happy to accept. He did as he was told, placed lights and shiny baubles where George pointed, and got the honor of setting the star on top at the very end.

"What do you think?" George asked him as they stood in front of the finished tree, one hand on Dream's back.

"Pretty tree!" Dream turned to him and beamed.

George returned the smile, it reaching all the way to his eyes. "I agree. Pretty Christmas tree, all thanks to us."

Safe to say Sapnap was just as impressed when he came in and saw it later.

...

When it came to the Christmas baking, Dream turned to his mom for help. It is no secret that the Dream Team are a little bit useless in the kitchen on their own.
