Longvipers breath hitched as he stared at the past clan leader, his brain aches for a logical answer. The huge cat with the blazing orange pelt walked to him and sat, looking the Marshclan cat in the eyes and staring. "Go-..Goldenstar..?" He muttered.
"A great change in the forest is coming, choose your actions wisely, Longviper."
Then the ginormous cat disapeared, only leaving behind the faint musky smell of the old forest. "Longviper? You okay?" Goldfish meowed, his voice tinted with humour as he looked at him with eyes that blazed like a green fire. "I.. I need to go, farewell kittypets!" He shouted as he rushed back into the thick undergrowth. Beetle could sense a tint of something that sounded like fear in his voice but they all yowled goodbye and hopped back up onto the concrete brick wall.
"That was weird, what did he mean by clans?" Rocky asked, looking at his friends with confusion filled eyes. "I don't even know, and i thought i was smart!" Beetle mewed, turning his head to groom his shoulder. "Yeah, did you guys notice him looking at us weird before he left? It almost looked like he was in some sort of like, trance!" Goldfish meowed, confused. "I saw his eyes, they traced back to you. Was he scared?" Beetle said, curious why the tom had went running. "I thought i heard him mutter something before he left, something like 'Get-Stall' ?" Rocky mewed.
"No no! It was something like 'Growing-Stan' !" Beetle incorrectly corrected him, "No no it was.. Golden-Stall? No.. Great-Star? No it was something like.." Goldfish wondered, thinking hard. "Goldenstar!" He yowled, the words echoing in excitement. "Yes! But what does that mean?" Beetle asked, subconsciously knowing his friend wouldn't know the answer. "Is it another one of those names? The clan ones! Y'know, like that Longviper had!" Rocky meowed, the words tumbling out of his mouth as he stared at his friends with a smile. "Yeah! Goldenstar.. That's such a cool name!" Beetle mewed, looking at Goldfish to see if he had any input.
But Goldfish was just looking out into the forest, his eyes full of wonder. "What do you guys think is out there?" He meowed, not taking his eyes off the trees. "Hm, I've guess never really thought about it?" Rocky responded, following his stare into the forest curiously.
"I've always thought it was just bears, badgers, wolves, cougars.. Oh, and foxes!" Beetle added, shivering and flicking his tail. "What if.. What if we went out there? Just the three of us!" Goldfish mewed, turning his head to look at his friends in excitement. "What? The forest? Are you crazy?" Beetle yelped, looking at him like the orange and white tabby was insane for asking. "I mean, it's not a horrible idea? It seems a like it could be a little bit fun out there!" Rocky challenged happily, Beetle looked at his paws, thinking hard.
"Fine. But only for a little bit, how about till dusk?" He compromised, looking at his friends as they nodded in agreement. "Alright, till dusk!"
All three toms agreed that they would come up with some rules for going into the forest, so that they wouldn't lose each other in the thick grove of tall pine trees and large oaks. "Alright, rule number one?" Beetle asked, creating a imaginary list in his head. "Hmm, how about 'Stay with the group'?" Rocky suggested, knowing that his friends would automatically agree. "Yes! How about for number two?" The amber-eyed blue tabby responded happily. "Don't eat any plants we don't recognize?" Goldfish answered, looking at his friends with excitement filled eyes. "That's a good one, for rule number three.." Beetle thought, staring at the ground for a few seconds before looking up with bright eyes that reflected that of a leopard. "Let's just make that one, 'Have fun!' !" He blurted out contently, happy with the rules they had come up with.
"Alright, you guys ready?" Goldfish said, looking at his friends with a serious but still excited look on his face. "Ready as i'll ever be!" Rocky exclaimed, letting out a spurt of laughter at the end. "That was cheesy, but i agree!" Beetle chuckled, smiling at his housemates. The orange and white tabby went first, sliding down the smooth concrete brick wall and taking a breath of the forest air before looking back and nodding to his friends, signalling them to come down. "If i die, it's your guy's fault.." Beetle mewed anxiously, a shiver in his voice as he watched Rocky jump down from the garden wall. "Cmon Beetle, it's nice down here!" Rocky said reassuringly, smiling at the amber eyed tabby. "Alright.." Beetle mumbled, looking at the other toms nervously before hopping off the barrier that held them from the forest in the past.
"So, where do you guys wanna go first?" Goldfish meowed, looking at his friends expectingly, having no idea where to start in this new territory. "There's a path over there, should we go that way?" Beetle answered, flicking his tail in the direction of a small overgrown path beside them. "No no! Let's go straight into the forest!" Rocky protested, pointing his nose towards a large grove of tall pines and thick oaks. "But what if we get caught by a bear? Or worse, a cougar!" Beetle mewed, shivering at the thought. "Oh come on, Beetle! There's no bears!" Goldfish chirped with a teasing tone. "Fine, but Cricket said he saw a wolf here once! Shouldn't we trust him since he's older then us ?" Beetle retaliated. "Oh you know Cricket, that old lump says he's seen everything!" Goldfish let out an amused 'Mrrow!". "He probably just saw another cat and and thought it was a wolf! That grumpy old tom couldn't tell me from a bear!" Rocky added, a soft purr spewed out of his muzzle at the thought. "You're right, that mound of fur probably hasn't even seen a magpie!" Beetle snickered.
"Alright, so which way are we going?" Goldfish asked, looking over to the forest. "I think Rockys right, it's gonna be more fun if we just go straight into the forest." Beetle chirped. "Alright, you guys ready?" Rocky turned to look at them, then gazing back to the forest with his warm amber eyes. Without saying anything Goldfish shot into the forest and stopped at the tree line, looking back to say one thing to his friends.
"Last one here is a rotten mouse!"
Merely seconds after he spoke his friends scrambled down the wall and started chasing after Goldfish, who had started running. "You'll never catch me!" shouted the white and orange tabby who continued to hop over rocks, swerve between trees, and dodge thorny brambles. Eventually they all came to a stop and looked at eachother, almost immediately, Rocky spoke "Do you guys smell that?" He asked, and almost as if they could read eachothers minds they all bent down and sniffed the earth. "It smells weird, and nasty too!" Goldfish's nose crinkled sourly. "Eww.. It smells like a rotting pile of dirt!" Beetle retched, turning to the other toms who nodded their heads in agreement. Goldfish glanced to Rocky and Beetle nervously and moved his muzzle closer to the ground. He could smell something, it wasn't something he had ever smelled before, but he was determined to find out where it was coming from.
As he sniffed the forest floor he found that his paws were taking him towards a horrible smelling stop in the trees, he looked over and just a few tail lengths in front of him was a thick, black path which had repeating yellow stripes in the middle, which were each a few fox lengths apart. "What is that?" Rocky asked, trotting beside Goldfish. "I guess we found where the smell was coming from." Beetle added, coming up behind them. Suddenly, a loud rumbling sound came from one side of the road and the ground began to shake rapidly. "Run!" Goldfish yowled, sprinting towards a tall oak tree and jumping onto one of the lower branches. A loud monster roared past the oak, leaving behind a horrid scent that burned the three toms nostrils. "Ugh, twolegs and their stupid monsters." Beetle sneered, hissing at the empty path.
"Should we cross it?" Rocky asked, looking at the two other toms sitting with him in the tree. "Okay, that idea is actually crazy." Beetle mewed, only a tint of noticeable sarcasm in his voice. "I mean, there's more forest on the other side, doesn't it seem interesting?" Goldfish added to Rocky's point, purring loudly at the blue tabby's words. Beetle nodded, lowering his head to lick his chest in embarrassment "Alright, since you went first last time, you should go first this time!" Rocky meowed, nudging Goldfish's shoulder with his nose jokingly. "Alright.. But you guys owe for me this!" Goldfish scrambled down from the low tree branch, cautiously but excitedly crawling over to the horrid smelling pathway. "Be careful!" Beetle yowled from the tree branch. "He'll be fine, i'm sure of it." Rocky moved over and gave Beetle an affectionate lick on the ear.
But just as the orange and white tom put a paw on the path, a loud rumbling came and the ground shook, the toms looked over and a monster sped towards them, it's glowing, hungry eyes set on its prey. Goldfish saw the incoming predator and in a moment of instinct, he sprinted across the black path, tail waving through the air. In all the commotion, Beetle and Rocky had lost track of Goldfish, and even once the monster had past, he was nowhere to be seen.
