APPEARANCE ― Yan is a teenage girl with long, dark hair that cascades down to her waist, pale skin, and brown eyes that shimmer with hints of green. When she disguises herself as a man, she cuts her hair short to the nape of her neck, though it grows back in varying lengths over time. In her mother's presence, she wears a traditional qixiong ruqun, a hanfu typically worn by young women. After leaving Ba Sing Se to join the Earth Kingdom military, Yan wears a long-sleeved olive green robe with an off-white undershirt, dusty white trousers, a brown leather belt, and dark leather boots. Initially required to wear heavy armor, she later discards most of it after allying with Prince Zuko, keeping only the armor attached to a belt around her waist. Following her escape from the Capital City Prison on the Day of Black Sun, Yan meets up with the Order of the White Lotus just outside Ba Sing Se where she is given a green sleeveless cropped tunic, dark trousers with a beige sash to tie around her waist, a single black cuff to place around her bicep, and white cloth to wrap around her hands and forearms for protection against flying projectiles. Five years after the war when she reunites with Zuko, Yan is first seen wearing a qixiong ruqun and a weimao hat. However, she soon changes into a dark green tunic with gold trim, dark sleeves that stop at her mid-upper arm, and a black sash around her waist. Her outfit is completed with dark green trousers and cloth wrapped around the ring finger of her right hand, and the index and middle fingers of her left hand.
BACKSTORY ― Yan Qiang was born in the Middle Ring of Ba Sing Se, the daughter of Lian and Fengge Qiang. Her mother ran a local qixiong shop while her father, having retired from the Fire Nation army, worked at a tea house. Life in Ba Sing Se was once peaceful, but when Yan was eleven, the city fell under the control of the Fire Nation; in the aftermath, bending — except for firebending — was outlawed in the once-Impenetrable City. To protect their daughter, Yan's parents forced her to suppress her earthbending abilities. Yet, Yan always found a way to practice in secret, honing her skills when no one was watching. During this time, Yan also became an older sister to a younger brother named Tao, but tragedy struck when Tao's life was tragically cut short. As she grew older, Yan's sense of freedom and rebellion only intensified; she longed to liberate her city and bring an end to the Fire Nation's oppressive rule. Despite her parents' assurances that the Avatar would arrive soon to restore balance, Yan grew impatient with waiting. The more she saw the Fire Nation soldiers parading through the streets and the rising discrimination against non-firebenders, the more defiant she became. Unable to bear the status quo any longer, Yan made the bold decision to leave her home. Disguising herself as a young man, she ventured to a military camp, determined to stop the Fire Nation's reign, even if it meant doing it on her own. Along the way, she unexpectedly forms an unlikely alliance with a Fire Nation prince, agreeing to help him reach his uncle in Ba Sing Se in exchange for his assistance in bringing down the dictatorship-like rule oppressing her city.
PERSONALITY ― Yan is an incredibly free-spirited individual, always eager to make a difference and lend a hand. Though she can be a bit of a slacker and tends to be lazy at times, when the situation demands it, she's the first to spring into action. Her patience is often short, especially when she's struggling with her bending and she can hesitate in battle. However, she's actively working on overcoming these weaknesses. Selflessness is one of Yan's defining traits; she consistently puts others before herself, particularly in the heat of battle. A defiant young woman, she doesn't shy away from voicing her opinions about the world, often clashing with her parents who remain blind to the issues she sees. With her free-spirited nature comes a fierce nonconformity: Yan is one of the most unconventional girls in all of Ba Sing Se. Whether riding on the back of her shirshu, getting dirtied by her earthbending, or refusing to wear the city's fancy clothes, she marches to the beat of her own drum, undeterred by the judgmental looks she receives.
WEAPONS OF CHOICE ― Inheriting her mother's earthbending abilities, Yan has the power to manipulate rocks of all sizes with telepathic precision. Her stance and mental focus play a significant role in her control, and her growing strength reflects her bending skills. However, Yan is far from a master; due to the illegality of bending in Ba Sing Se, her training has been limited to basic and intermediate techniques. Her mother taught her a few advanced moves, but Yan doesn't consider herself an expert like Toph or King Bumi. Over time, she'll discover her rare ability to lavabend, something that sets her apart. Beyond bending, Yan is also highly skilled with a sword, having undergone military training after leaving Ba Sing Se. Although proficient in combat, she prefers using her bending, as it feels more natural to her; she resorts to her sword only when forced to conceal her bending. After escaping a Fire Nation prison, Yan undergoes further training which sharpens both her earthbending and lavabending abilities, preparing her for the challenges ahead.
