The Beginning"Y/N." My mother spoke softly. "This is Shane and his family." She stepped over to reveal a young boy with two parents, they towered over him and wore gray clothing. I hid behind the corner of the couch and they all walked in, scared from their appearance.
"Why don't you go play with Shane?" My mother inquired. "Us adults need to have a conversation." She looked over to his parents and smiled. I looked at Shane and he looked at me. He was a small boy for his age but that hadn't bothered me. I walked up to him and grabbed his wrist, looking into his deep emerald eyes and watching as he looked up at me. I quickly looked away and dragged him through the dining area and to my room.
We sat down on the middle of my carpeted floor and I looked at him again, sitting in silence, his heavy breathing was the only audible sound.
"How old are you Shwane." I asked, my front tooth was missing so I had a slur. I watched as he counted on his fingers, quickly holding up a 6. I looked at his hand and waited for him to speak.
"Why aren't you talking?" I stated politely, putting my hands in my lap, my pleated skirt caving in slightly. We sat there for a minute, waiting. Before he spoke.
"My mother and father told me I must not speak without permission." He whispered, looking at my door. I sat there for a bit wondering why.
"They can't hear uws." I whispered back, he slowly smiled, and I think that's when I noticed we were gonna be friends.
3 years later...
"3... 2.. 1! Come out, come out! Wherever you are!" I yelled as I ran through my large backyard, peeking behind bushes and through fences. I heard rustling behind my mothers old minivan and ran around it.
"What?" I stammered, looking around. I watched as he crawled out from under the car and ran.
"I bet you can't catch me!" He shouted, racing to the back of the yard. I ran as fast as I could and fell over a small stump. I froze up for a second, looking up with my hands still on the ground. I watched as he slowly turned around and looked at me before running back, but before he could make it to me, I heard footsteps.
"Y/N!" A womanly voice roared. I quickly looked behind me and watched as my mother stomped up to me.
"You must not be playing games like this!" She yelled, staring at my mud covered dress and bloody elbows. "This is a boys game, you must go inside and help your aunt clean the dishes!" I hesitated as she stood there waiting for me to get up.
"You inconsiderate shit!" She shouted, grabbing me by my arm and pulling me up, I stumbled over my feet as one of my pink shoes ripped off my foot, I grunted in pain, trying to stand up as she dragged me. I looked behind me and saw Shane, standing there with a frown on his face. He bent down and picked up my shoe.
"I knew I shouldn't have let you play with that boy..." She stammered under her breath.
Once we got inside I yelped in pain as she spanked me with my fathers belt. Tears running down my face.
"I hope to never catch you playing games like that again, there will be consequences." She held my shoulders. "If it happens again... I'll tell father." Shivers ran down my spine as I thought of him, screaming at me.
"Now go help your aunt clean the dishes and get out of your dirtied dress, I don't want you growing up a tomboy." She stated sternly. She stood up and walked to the dining room, picking up a slim glass of wine and gave me the look, I quickly bolted off to my room to get changed, the fear of her spanking me again ran through my veins.
I was in a small white tank top and small shorts when I heard a knock on the window, I quickly opened the blinds and he flinched at the sight of me. I pushed open the window and looked at him.
"Where are your clothes?" He asked, peeking at me through his fingers at my bear shoulders.
"My mother told me to change, I had dirtied my dress." I said, smiling at him, sitting before the window sill, my arms folded on the wood.
"Well I brought your shoe." He grinned, handing it to me. "I'm surprised your feet don't stink, but I guess that's because you're a girl." He pondered. I froze for a moment.
"You smelt my shoe?" I questioned him, he stared at me for a second and bolted, leaving me embarrassed. I gently closed the window and pulled down the blinds, slipping on a small pink polka dot dress, I stopped at the door and took a deep breath before walking out.
I arrived in the kitchen and pulled my stool over to the sink, scrubbing the dishes and setting them to the side for my aunt.
"You're a beautiful girl Y/N" My aunt said, grinning at the sight of me. "Just don't let a boy ruin that for you when you're older." She said, stowing a mug in the cupboard.
"What do you mean?" I asked curiously, staring at her while I let the water run.
"Boys will be boys!" She laughed, "Right Angela?" She yelled across the house. I listened as my mom responded, I had barely ever heard her name and it surprised me.
"Also, Turn that damn water off." Mother shouted. "I know I'm gonna be the one to pay the water bill." I quickly turned the knob on the sink and my aunt left the room. My aunt's words repeated through my head.
"Boys will be- boys." I whispered, trying to make sense of it. I heard footsteps so I quickly got back to work, scared for a slap on the wrist.
