Backstory: When Elizabeth was just a small girl, her father had a rather sizable debt with Jacob Marley. Rather than go to debtor's prison or pay the debt himself, he gave his only daughter to Marley so that she could work for the money lender and pay his debt for him. When she was 13 , Marley died, but he left her to his business partner Ebenezor Scrooge, to pay off the rest of the debt. She now works both in his home as a scullery maid and in his counting house as a sort of secretary.
