Rising of the Undead

Chapter 2: Meeting Sky

Alex ran. He could feel the wind drying his eyes, the gravel beneath his feet and the zombies gaining on him. He wasn't a particularly fast runner so their moans kept alerting him that they were right behind him.

He stopped. There was a barrier stationed in front of him. His lungs were burning and his leg muscles screamed at him so he was glad it as there, but he knew, if he stayed there for too long the zombies would eat what they wanted of him and leave the rest to turn. He tried to run again but the zombies were gaining in every direction. He broke off a plank of wood from the barrier. Weighed it in his hand and threw it at the nearest zombie. It set him a step back but otherwise it did nothing to harm him. "Damn" he thought. He was going to die here and he never even got to see his parents. Infected or not he wanted to see them, to know their fate. He thought of something heroic to say. These were going to be his last moments. Nothing came to mind.

Abruptly, a hooded figure moved amongst the rooftops. Alex knew it was probably just one of the roof cleaners. The zombies were gaining. The nearest five were Ale's neighbours. He knew one of their names, Tom. Never liked him. Tom was always a control-freak. Always bossing Alex around. Alex knew this was a bad thing but he was happy he turned. Suddenly a cold hand grabbed Alex just before the first zombie hit. It dragged Alex through unknown streets to him. They ran solidly for five minutes. Alex's lungs were burning for the second time in 20 minutes. He didn't like this, nor did he know who was leading him. Suddenly they stopped running. They were in an abandoned shopping mall. So much had happened in an hour. She took her hood off.

"Hello," she said, "my name's Sky".

She was medium height average sized and about Alex's age. He was 15 so she guessed she was too. She had brown hair and green eyes and was wearing a grey tracksuit.

"So you just heard the news huh? About the explosion I mean." Said Sky confidently.

"Um yeah". Alex mumbled

"So the zombies aren't as scary as I thought they'd be. I mean they look dead and all, you know, but they just don't have that scare factor. They just look like they've woken up form a long sleep, that's all." Stated Sky.

"Yeah I agree." Said Alex. Something about her. Maybe the way she talked or just her personality. Maybe just for saving his life. Something about her just made him feel warm, safe. He liked her not just as a friend. He more than liked her. He knew they'd just met so he thought he'd give it some time before telling her how he felt.

"It's cold in here. After the explosion the infected cut off all the electricity. They may be dead but their brains still work." So let's get out of here". Said Sky.

"They might come here to look for more people to infect if their brain still work. After all their main objective would probably be to increase their population." Stated Alex.

"Yeah!" Exclaimed Sky. "Sorry I didn't catch your name".

"Alex" Said Alex.

"Hum, Alex." Pondered Sky. "Nice name."

They set off through the vast halls of the shopping mall avoiding zombies and looking for safe exits.
