You sipped on your water bottle as you stared out at the rolling waves before you. You felt Jon's calloused hand on your bare thigh, and you felt truly at home here, on the beach with him. It was such a cliche setting for a picnic such as this, but, as much as you dissed cliches, you loved this date more than any other you two had had.
Jon was carelessly stuffing the trash from your meal into the basket. You watched him, entranced by his every movement. Somehow, he managed to make picking up a juice box wrapper look cute. You placed your hand on top of his, marveling at how that boy was yours.
He looked at you with a smile that only he could give, pulling down the flap of the picnic basket. He looked down at the blanket you two were sitting on, giggling. "How is it possible for one human being to make so many crumbs?"
You looked down and saw that you had indeed made crumbs. Lots of them, in fact. You carelessly brushed them away. "What crumbs?"
Jon rolled his eyes, shaking his head with that same Jon grin. He looked away and at the waves, rubbing your thigh absently.
You noticed that he was a lot more thoughtful than usual today. Not thoughtful in the sense of doing favors or being kind, but thoughtful in the sense that he looked, well, in thought. This whole date, he seemed to have a faraway look on his face.
In reply, you lightly touched his shoulder. "What are you thinking about?" you wanted to know.
Jon visibly colored slightly. "Oh, it's nothing."
"Tell me!" you responded, playfully shaking him by the shoulder. All of a sudden, you were struck with the fear that whatever was on his mind was bad. Your relationship had been progressing beautifully, so if he had some issue or wasn't happy. . . Oh God, was he breaking up with you?
He must've seen your expression change from curiosity to panic, since he grinned and said, "It's nothing bad, (Y/N). God, you worry too much."
You let out a breath of air you hadn't even realized you had been holding. "Well, when my boyfriend stares off into space and insists he's not thinking about anything, what other logical conclusion should I come to?"
"I said I'm never leaving you. You should know me enough by now to know I mean that."
Somewhat guilty at your anxious nature, you grabbed his hand and squeezed it. "You're right. I'm sorry."
There was a bit of silence between the two of you.
"So, can you tell me, then?" you prodded gently. Jon was like a deer. A gentle delivery was necessary for him to open up to you. One wrong word and he would emotionally retreat, keeping his thoughts secret from you.
"Well," he began hesitantly, "I've just been thinking. About our future."
"What about our future?"
"Like. . .where we go from here. Marriage, kids, the whole nine yards. I realized a bit ago that we've never discussed any of that, even though I've been thinking about it for a long time." He rested his hands on his thighs, and you could see them trembling slightly.
The fact that he had thought about those things too made your heart light up. "Okay."
You grabbed his hands to stop the trembling, offering him what you hoped was a comforting smile. "So, let's discuss it, then."
