Monika POV
Honestly, if it wasn't for Sayori, I would've given up on the club. But for every 'member' who bailed on us and every day where it was just us two in the clubroom alone, Sayori was always there with a friendly smile and laugh. At first I was annoyed that no new members joined my club, I had been sure my popularity would benefit finding members, but I had been wrong. However, I began to relax and hanging out with Sayori became fun. One meeting I had tried for ages to bake cupcakes, but I can't cook to save my life. I ended up just buying cupcakes at the store.
"Oh my god cupcakes!" Sayori's eyes lit up as soon as I walked through the door, "Did you make them?!"
"I tried to..." I placed them down onto a desk, "They burnt so I just bought some from the store."
"Oh." She reached out a hand, "Still, you tried..." She was staring at the cupcakes greedily.
I half sighed half laughed, "You can have one." She took it eagerly but I was distracted. "Do you have the list with our idea's fro new members? I'm sure I gave it to you on Friday..."
"Ah! Fudge!" Sayori never says swear words, she substitutes them for the weirdest things, "It's in my bag... which I left last period." She lept up, "I'll get it now..." She ran out of the door, leaving me alone. I picked up a cupcake and bit into it. It tasted alright, but stuff from the store is never half as good as home-made food. Not that I had had home-made food in a while. Mum was way too distracted and just moped around all day doing her 'important job'. Dad was on honeymoon with his new wife Patricia in Spain. Mum and Dad had gone through a messy divorce which lasted three years. I was glad it was over, but I couldn't help wishing I had stayed with Dad. He would've been happy to look after me, even if he wasn't as well off as Mum. But Patricia didn't want kids, and Dad preffered her over me. Besides, Mum wasn't all bad. She left me to myself, which was pretty freeing.
"Monika, Monika, Monika, Monika, MONIKA!" Sayori burst through the door, breaking my train of thought.
"Yes?" I asked, then frowned. "Sayori, you still don't have my bag..."
"Not... important." Sayori was bent over, hands on her knees and panting. She must have run a long way. "SO I was oon my way to my classroom when I saw a girl reading a book!"
"So?" A girl reading a book wasn't that crazy.
"SO she must be interested in literature! She looked super invested in her book!" Sayori was jumping up and down.
"Ok..." I still couldn't get at what Sayori was trying to say.
"OK?!" Sayori exclaimed, "Monika we can ask her to join the club!"
I felt a stab of disappointment. I had gotten so used to it just being me and Sayori that I didn't quite want a new member. But I only felt that for a moment. I put my feelings aside and started to behave like a president.
"Well done Sayori!" I smiled, "Ok... where is this girl?"
"This way!" Sayori led me down corridors and stairs until we stopped outside a door. I could see a purple haired girl reading a book, looking extremely invested in the story. Sayori looked at me.
"What?" I hissed.
"Go in there!" She mouthed. I shook my head but she pushed me in encouragely. I stumbled into the room. I awkwardly cleared my throat.
She didn't even look up! I stood there embarrased, then walked over to her desk. I opened my mouth to speak, but instead I threw down a leaflet of the club and half walked half ran out of the door.
"Well?" Sayori asked as soon as I exited.
"Ah... it was so embarrassing..." I muttered as we headed down the corridor - after all, Sayori still needed her bag. "She didn't even look up from her book! So I- uh... left the leaflet on her desk..."
"And then?"
"Uh... then I left..." I cringed, it sounded so stupid. I glanced at Sayori.
"Well... hopefully she'll be interested..." Sayori shrugged.
"Urgh..." I folded my arms over my chest sadly, "I should've talked to her... been a proper president..."
"You ARE a proper president!" Sayori suddenly jumped up and hugged me, which caught me off guard. "It's not your fault if you were shy!"
I wouldn't say 'shy' was the right word, but I let it slide, "Thanks Sayori. Who knows, maybe she'll be interested?" I hugged her back, but inside I was very doubtful
