___________________________________________________________It was close to midnight when Inspector Zenigata, with two teenage girls in tow, staggered tiredly into a dingy motel halfway between Dal Fiume and Milan. He was ragged, tired, and sore, and yet he still bore the weight of the smaller girl, Adela, who was fast asleep in his arms.
Kierra kept pace with him as he approached the front desk of the motel; a motel which left, in her opinion, rather a lot to be desired. She watched with detached interest as the inspector attempted to communicate with the concierge – if the lanky, balding, badly-dressed man behind the desk could be called that – and stated his desire for a single room with a bath.
First, perhaps instinctively and out of tiredness, the Inspector spoke in Japanese, but the concierge wasn't comprehending. Then, when Zenigata addressed him in English, the concierge took issue with his accent. Despite the rather heated and increasing volume of what seemed to be turning into a full-blown argument between the two, Adela hardly stirred. With a sigh, Kierra stepped forward and translated.
"One room with a bath."
The concierge offered up the key and Zenigata forked over his credit card.
"And I want a receipt!"
"I don't see why we couldn't just stay at the hotel where Adela and I made reservations," Keirra grumbled as she followed him to the elevator. "That place was totally swank! And they had a pool! A fucking pool!"
"It's too dangerous! Del Monte knows who you two are. And you know what he's up to. The fact that you've interfered in his business puts your lives at risk. You two should never have gotten involved."
What a day this had been. Once again, Lupin slipped through his fingers, Ruby, while safely out of Antony Del Monte's hands, was allowed to return to Lupin, and Zenigata couldn't even arrest Del Monte! And on top of all this, now he was stuck babysitting Ruby's two friends who had no business getting involved with any of this in the first place. What a day, indeed.
But at least it was all over now.
Kierra crossed her arms and leaned against the back of the elevator, pouting. "Oh, yeah, sure. Like we just wanted to die. Technically, I still don't know what he's up to. I just know he hurt Ruby, and we would do anything for our friend." She turned her hard gaze on Zenigata. "Anything," she repeated.
The inspector simply nodded in response. To have such daring and loyal friends... Ruby was a lucky girl. The elevator doors opened and they trudged down the hallway.
"My shoes are sticking to the carpet," Kierra muttered with disgust.
"It's only for one night," mumbled Zenigata.
"Speaking of... Do you think..." she hesitated. "Do you think they – Ruby and them, that is – do you think they got out of all that okay? I-I mean..."
She glanced furtively at Adela who, after parting ways from Ruby and frantically grabbing their belongings from their former hotel and stuffing it into Zenigata's car, had cried herself to sleep.
"... they were shooting at them."
Zenigata didn't look her way; his gaze was more focused on trying to locate their room. "Don't underestimate Lupin. He's a crafty little devil. If Ruby's with him..."
