Since childhood, she never wished to live like ordinary people did. The young girl knew that she was destined for something great - something eternal and pivotal. Some called it a God-complex, but Rei labelled it determined. Ivory wings sprouted from between her shoulder blades and she was souring, the world in the palm of her hands ... until the sky was snatched away from her and tragedy struck her down.
A tragedy so sudden it hacked at her wilted body and left her wingless. She consoled herself with a number of bad decisions, pushing the memory deep into her skin and tucking it between the bones of her ribcage. The substances kept her blissfully numb, the corners of her vision always blurry and sugary - the taste of a sweet, tragedy-less life lingering on the tip of her tongue. She became unrecognisable, throwing herself into the wrong crowd and tangling in the glittery webs of artificial euphoria.
The time came when she had to face the music, however. Enrolling into a career that demanded the upmost physical and mental discipline seemed to work for a while, giving her a purpose and focus. But, bad habits never really die - no matter how hard she tried. Again, they chopped and snagged and left her on the rain-slick streets of Tokyo with nowhere to go and nobody to be. Soulless and defeated, she finally accepted that life would always be this way.
She hated reality, but when it was twisted into something malicious and deadly, she was stuck with a choice: either let the remains of her past dig the grave for her own tragedy, or become a new being. Something resolute - a persistent thing, willing to do whatever it takes to survive and transform. In this game-riddled place she could be anyone she wanted, she could turn caterpillar to butterfly.
So, once again, Rei decided that she was destined. Destined to overcome the borderland. Destined to redeem herself. Destined to not just survive, but to live.
