The next day Ivy walked into the orientation room with Aisha talking about the upcoming unlocking of their magic. Ivy’s force fields weren’t technically her magic, it was some sort of side effect from the flower that her grandmother ingested when she was pregnant. Rapunzel got glowing hair that kept people young when she sang and Ivy got force fields that she could turn into weapons to kill if she was angry.

“I think it’s cool that you can create force fields.” Aisha told the girl.

“Thanks but you wouldn’t think so if you were around when I first found out I could create them.” Ivy laughed remembering when she accidentally destroyed a statue when she waved her hand to say goodbye to family friends when she was twelve.

Ivy and Aisha sat with the rest of their roommates, engaging in conversation with them before the blonde glanced over at the group of laughing Nevers. She saw Hort and Leo laughing with the group of girls from the other day at a couple of Evers. Hort glanced her way and they locked eyes, Ivy sent him a small wave before Lady Lesso and Professor Dovey walked on to the platform.

“Shut up!” Lady Lesso shrieked, silencing everyone.

“Everyone, find your seats.” Professor Dovey called out in a gentle tone. “To access one’s magic, one must first unlock one’s finger glow.”

“Once you’ve mastered your finger glow, it will prove to be invaluable.” Lady Lesso added, “Shall we?”

“Have no fear, Evers. Good feels no pain.”

“Nevers,. . .” Lady Lesso trailed off with a laugh, “it’s going to hurt. Line up!”

They all rushed into two lines, Evers and Nevers, eager to access their magic. Ivy stood behind Beatrix at the front of the line, standing next to Hort. Ivy held out her finger and flinched at the strange feeling of the key being stabbed into her skin and twisted.

The tip of her finger began to glow and a smile spread across her face. Professor Dovey complimented her glow before sending her on her way.

“Your finger glow helps you become aware of the power inside you.” Professor Dovey informed them.

Hort gasped and whimpered in pain as Lady Lesso harshly stabbed the key into his finger. He then smiled at his school Dean. “Thank you, ma’am.”

“When your finger glows, it means you’ve begun to tap into emotions powerful enough to cast a spell,” said Lady Lesso.

“The stronger your feelings, the stronger your magic.” Professor Dovey continued.

Ivy stood off to the side with her friends when the curtains dramatically opened to reveal Agatha’s friend, Sophie, with a new haircut and new clothes.

“I hope I’m not late.” Sophie strutted forward to the front of the line until she stood in front of Lady Lesso.

“What’s this all about?”

“This? Turns out you did me a favor. I was long overdue for a makeover.” The blonde smirked, “Now if you don’t mind activating my powers, I’d be most grateful.”

“Hm.” Lady Lesso raised a brow and stabbed the key into her finger.

“Thank you.”

Sophie walked away with her finger glow held high and strutted away. A new aura of authority and confidence radiating off her, Ivy liked her new look.

Ivy sat against a tree as she watched Sophie and her new friends strut past the princes practicing archery. As Tedros watched the newly confident girl walk by, his arrow slipped from his fingers and it headed straight for Ivy before she put up a shield causing it to ricochet off it and land a few feet away.
