Prologue

"Taha Aki's descendants no longer turned into wolves. For many years, it was peaceful in our home. Our ancestors lived and worked every day to appease the spirits. Until one day a group of cold ones appeared but these were different than the ones from before. They made a pact with the chief, Ephraim Black, to never harm the Quileute tribe and, in return, we would never expose them to the humans. When they are here, the spirits select young men from our tribe to step up and take the form of wolves to protect the tribe if ever the cold ones broke their word."

CRACK

Four children jumped in fear as a log cracked in the fire. One of the children, a girl, grabbed onto one of the boys by her. This boy wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. The other two boys gulped and glanced around the darkened forest. The native American man sitting before them laughed. "Do not fear young ones. We are safe here from the cold ones. The necklaces all of you wear is a reminder of our spiritual ancestors. The wolf is one of us and will protect us from the cold ones if they ever return."

The four children smile as they each look at the wolf necklace the man gave them to wear around their necks. To help them remember the blessing the ancestors gave to protect their tribe.

"Have you been telling them tribal stories again, Billy Black?" A woman asked in a fake angry voice.

The man smiled. "Yes, I have Sara. It's important they know our stories. They will one day tell it to their children who will pass it to theirs."

Sara laughed. "All right children, into your sleeping bags."

The four children quickly climbed in their sleeping bags as the two adults gave each a hug and wished them goodnight.

Sara crossed her arms staring at the four. "I want you all to go right to sleep. It's way past your bedtimes."

"Yes Mrs. Sara Yes Mom" The four children called out.

The two adults walked in the house leaving the four children to fall asleep. A shooting star suddenly went across the sky.

The girl sat up and pointed at the shooting star. "Look it's a shooting star. We need to all make a wish."

The other three sat up and smiled. They didn't believe in shooting stars, but they would humor their friend. They all closed their eyes and wished with all their might.

"I wish to be a great chief like my dad" one boy said.

"I wish to be a firefighter." Another said.

"I wish to have a motorcycle when I grow up." The last boy said.

The girl closed her eyes and silently wished with all her heart. 'I wish we would be friends forever.'

They laid down staring at the stars above. The girl glanced around at her friends. "Do you think the stories are true?"

One of the boys laughed. "Please tell me you don't believe in that, Maya? There are no way dad's stories are true. There is no such thing as spirit warriors."

The girl sat up. "But what if your dad is telling the truth, Jacob?"

The boy on her left sat up and started poking her in the side. Maya squealed out in laughter as she tried to move away from her friend.

"Embry, stop. It tickles." She exclaimed.

Embry laughed. "I know. Why do you think I do it?"

"Mercy. Please. Jacob. Quil. Help." Maya begged.

Jacob and Quil sat up laughing as they watched the show. Embry smiled. "Tell me what you wished for, and I will stop."

The girl shook her head. "It won't come true."

Embry got out of his sleeping bag and raised his hands up twitching his fingers. "Your choice. Spill or squeal."

Maya immediately held her hands up. "Ok. Just stop."

Embry high fived Jacob and Quill. It was easy to get Maya to reveal her secrets. She was just too ticklish to fight against any of the boys. The three boys turned to stare at their friend.

"I wished the four of us would be friends forever." Maya said with a blush on her face. "Stupid wish, right?"

The boys smiled. She was the sensitive one in the group.

"No, it's not." Quill said.

"of course, we will always be friends." Jacob said.

Embry held his pinky out. "Pinky swears. Friends forever."

Maya reached out and hooked her pinky with his. Jacob and Quill came over and the four locked pinkies together.

"No matter what our futures hold. We will always be friends. Forever and ever." Jacob said.

"Forever and ever." Maya, Embry, and Quill said.

"I see four children who should be trying to sleep right now, or they will be grounded forever and ever." A voice called.

The four children looked toward the door of the cabin and saw Sara Black standing there with her arms crossed. She had an amused look on her face.

"Yes Mrs. Sara, Yes Mom." The children called.

They all quickly got into their sleeping bags and closed their eyes. The chirping of the crickets lured the four into a deep sleep. They had no way of knowing that the friendship promise they made would soon be tested and the dreams they had for the future would shatter into a million pieces.
