Chapter 17

Rain poured from the sky. To some, this was the exact kind of weather on a day like this. People lingered all around. They all were slowly walking to the exact same place.

The new grave where a light brown casket was waiting to be buried. All over the area were several new graves of tribal kids who had died in the wolf attack a week ago. This was the only explanation that the police could figure out. It had to have been a pack of rabid wolves.

Death was always hard for some people to deal with, but it was harsher when burying someone so young. This would be the sixth funeral of the week and there were two more to go. The pack stood by the newest grave. Embry, Quil and Jacob had tears running down their faces.

Sam held Emily in his arms as she cried in devastation. He gave her a kiss on the head and glanced around at the ones who showed up. Being a werewolf, Sam could smell the scent of sadness and the scent of tears ran down people's faces.

Sam could hear what everyone was talking about with his sensitive hearing. Everyone was discussing how an animal killed tons of teens at a party.

People glanced at the grave. One question people had was how a girl like Maya could have ended up where she was. Some did not even know the girl, but they showed up because she was part of the tribe.

Sam pulled Emily closer in his arms when Billy moved forward to start the funeral. Sam's eyes moved to the grave. The whole reason they turned into wolves was to protect their people from vampires. Now, they were burying several of their teens. They had failed.

He had failed. He was the alpha and he failed to keep a good protection detail around the tribal land. Why did this happen?

Maya was too young to die. Jacob, Quil and Embry would never get over her death. They would never forgive him or the elders for keeping them away from their friend.

Sam glanced at the coffin as it was lowered down into the ground. Decorated on top was a bouquet of white lilies. Embry insisted on it. White lilies represented purity and rebirth. Sam prayed that Maya would have a better life in the afterlife.

Sam watched as the boys' step forward and dropped lilies of different colors into the grave. They had suffered so much to live up to the destiny that the ancestors placed on them. They had to deal with the consequences of keeping a secret that they should not be responsible for.

Sam closed his eyes wishing he could have saved them. Why was he a failure as an alpha?

"Sam...Sam...Sam, wake up"

Sam slowly lifted his head up from the back of the chair.

He glanced at Emily before jerking his head to the bed.

Maya was still asleep. The doctors had said she was in a coma from the damage the animal had done. She had a broken leg, broken several ribs, a punctured lung and bleeding on the brain.

Sam sighed and rubbed his eyes. He was ready for Maya to wake up.

Emily sighed. Sam and the other boys blamed themselves for the death of all those children.

Maya was the only survivor.

Emily placed her hand on Sam's arm.

"It's not your fault Sam."

Sam wrapped his arms around Emily's waist pulling her into his lap.

"I know but I can't help but think if I had just run faster. If I had checked up on her sometime during the night. I knew something was up, but I was hoping I was wrong. I thought we could trust her."
