Chapter Four

Six weeks.

That had been how long it had been since Maya and the others had seen Embry. He was not in school, and Mrs. Cull was not letting them into the house to see him.

Maya, Quil and Jacob took turns getting Embry's homework to drop it off at his house hoping for a chance to see their friend. They were given the same excuse as why they could not see him.

Mrs. Cull would give them a sad stare and shake her head. "Embry has Mono. It's contagious. I'll tell him you stopped by"

She would take the makeup work and shut the door in their faces.

Mrs. Call stopped answering the door by the third week and left a note on the door to leave the work in the basket by the door for her to pick up later. They would knock on the door and call out to her, but she would never come to the door.

By week four, they had started leaving the homework and notes for Embry to call them.

Week five and six was the worst. Mrs. Call called the school to have them collect the work and she would pick it up from them.

The three kids were completely frustrated but they did not know what they do.

The three would sit there and discuss what was going on. The ride to school was quiet. Maya had even stopped asking for the usual Coffey stop.

Quil had looked up medical journals about mono and was confused on why Embry was still being isolated when mono was said to only go two to four weeks. They had all made the decision if Embry was not at school on Monday, they were going to police chief Charlie Swan for a wellness checkup on their friend. Something was not right at all.

Maya was taking it the hardest. They were really close. His house was only 5 minutes away from hers and they would often crash at each other's houses when they got into arguments with their parents. Maya just wanted to know if Embry was ok. It wasn't much to ask.

As Friday came around no one expected to see Embry show up at school.

Jacob, Maya and Quil had just gotten out of the truck when Quil grabbed both their arms.

"No freaking way?!?!?" He said in shock.

Maya and Jacob looked at him confused until he pointed it out.

There was the Hall Monitors on Steroids, Paul and Jared, but what stood out was a new member of their group.

The guy turned around causing Maya and Jacob's mouths to drop.

Embry had joined the Hall Monitors. He had grown taller and filled out with tons of muscles. His long hair had been cut shorter and he had stopped wearing his earrings. On his arm was the signature tattoo associated with the gang. He looked completely different

Embry tensed when he saw his former friends. He knew what he had to do but he didn't want to do it.

Jarod reached over and squeezed his shoulder. "It's for their protection man. You have got to do it."

Embry nodded before walking over to talk to them. All the other reservation kids stopped to watch. They had witnessed this twice before, but it was still shocking to see.

Maya bit her lip. "Embry?!? Why are you with them?!?" she asked.

Embry kept his face blank and refused to look at her.

"We can't be friends anymore. I want you guys to leave me alone. I have new friends now and they are better for me than you three."

Tears started running down Maya's face. She could hear a buzzing noise in her ears. Other reservation kids started whispering about Sam Uley corrupting another kid.

Embry turned to walk away when Jacob grabbed his arm. "So that's it. You're just going to throw away our friendship like that? We have been friends since we were in diapers. Are you kidding me?"

Jacob's voice rose louder and louder till he was shouting at Embry.

Embry's body started shaking. "You don't understand man. I have no choice in this. Just let me go."

Maya moved forward and placed a hand on Embry's arm "Is Sam blackmailing you? We can help you Embry. Just don't walk away. Don't leave us."

Embry turned and looked into Maya's eyes....and felt nothing. He sighed and reached forward to wipe the tears from her face.

"Sam is the good guy. You guys don't understand. He is not forcing me to do anything. I'm sorry but I don't want to be friends with you anymore. It was a mistake to keep this friendship up. Now leave me alone."

Embry jerked his arm away from Jacob before stomping over to Jared and Paul. Maya burst into tears. Quil grabbed her and pulled her into his arms as he tried to process what just happened.

Jacob stared at Embry with anger burning though his eyes. He could not believe that Embry had chosen the hall monitors over his friends.

Ring Ring Ring.

Quil gently led Maya toward the school. "Come on Jacob. We need to get to class."

Jacob frowned. Embry would pay for this. He would figure out some way to get him to pay for Maya's tears. "No. Let's get out of here. We can miss one day."

Quil licked his lips and glanced at Embry before nodding his head. The thee got in Jacob's truck and left the school.

The other reservation kids shook their heads as they headed into the building. It made them all wonder who Sam would go for next for his cult. No one was safe.

IN THE PARKING LOT

Embry leaned on Jared's truck and closed his eyes. He heard Maya sobbing and could feel the burning stare of Jacob. He could see in his mind the pain on Quil's face as he walked away. It was not fair.

He turned as the three got back in Jacob's truck to leave the school grounds. Maya was still crying and Quil had tears running down his face. It wasn't fair.

His arms started shaking. He had always been the one to comfort Maya when something happened. Now because of the stupid ancestors he couldn't get near her or tell her the truth. It was not fair.

He tensed when Jared squeezed Embry's shoulder.

Jared and Paul shared a look. They had been here once. They knew it wasn't fair.

"Let's get out of here." Paul nodded toward the truck.

Jared looked at the school and then at Embry who was still shaking.

He nodded his head. The three got into the truck and left to go to Sam's.

Sam wouldn't be happy, but he would understand.

There is always tomorrow.
