Daddy was finally back from another trip at Sea, and Laura was thrilled to see her father at last. It had been several months since little Laura and her mother had seen him, and she couldn't wait for her daddy to tell her about all of the adventures he faced. Laura rushed to the dock to see her father's gigantic boat sailing straight towards her. Laura loved being at the dock, smelling the salty air, hearing the seagulls squawk at complete nothingness, it was magical to her. She climbed atop the wooden railing she had climbed on so many times before, her dark red hair peeking out of her fathers handkerchief she wore in her hair. As the boat sailed in, she heard the crew cheering and singing so loudly, and she knew every word. The board was let loose to the dock as one by one, they all came up to Laura and her mother.
"Afternoon ma'am, little Laura." Smolden did a half toothed grin and a small bow to the pair, as Laura hopped down from the pillar she had been sitting on.
"Hi Smolden!" Laura yelled as she returned the bow, pretending to be a part of the crew. Smolden picked her up on his shoulders and took her to the ship. Before boarding, he asked-
"Is it alright to take her to see the captain, ma'am?"
"Of course dear, and please, don't be so formal. Call me Melody." Laura's mother responded.
" Sure'd like to ma'am, but the captin have me head if I didn't treat his family with respect." Smolden called back as he took a little Laura to the boat. As soon as they boarded, Smolden set Laura down and took her to the captains courts.
He knocked three times before entering.
"Captin, sir? A little birdie's here to stop in." Smolden said, once again, removing his shaggy hat and giving a small bow, hairy arms flailing in the wind. The captain turned suddenly in his chair.
"A birdie, say? And does said birdie, have a gift?"
Laura ran over and gave her father a hug as he lifted her up and gave her a tight squeeze. She nodded
"Uh-huh. Me and mommy made biscuits!" Laura called out as her father hoisted her onto his shoulders.
"Did you now? Oh, I love mommy's baking!" He responded, tickling her feet. Laura whispered in his ear-
"Except when she burns them." And they both started to laugh.
Her father carried her out of the captains corner and took her up to the wheel.
"Captain!" One of the scruffier men called up, making his way to them.
"Yes, Connell?" Laura's father responded.
As he took her from a top his shoulders, Laura noticed an open hatch below on deck. Her father, distracted, she's crept down. Laura had seen every part of the ship, new every inch of it, but she never knew about this. She snuck into the hatch and saw what must've been hundreds upon thousands of treasures.
She couldn't believe her eyes!
Laura's family had always been on the poor side, so this could help all of them settled down in a nicer part of town! Laura suddenly heard a noise. She ducked behind a couple of barrels and saw Smolden, Connell, and her father, examining the coins.
"Captain we have to put it all back!" Smolden said, gesturing to the treasures around them.
Connell cut in-
"No! Menwife and kids need some of those to get us through the week! You know how that would be, think of yee's family, too!"
"Exactly my point, captain. Think of yer wife, think of Laura! We can't risk it!"
Her father was silent for a moment, then sighed.
"We can't risk it, Smolden's right. We all have our families to think of. We shain't let greed to get in the way of that."
"Thank you, captain." Smolden responded, clapping. Connell upside the head rather harshly. Connell spoke up suddenly,
"Speakin of one's familiars, where be Laura, captain?"
The room went silent.
"She's probably in yer Captains quarts, sir." Smolden sad. Laura's father nodded. Connell and her father went above deck while Smolden stayed behind.
"All right little Laura, you can come up now.
Uh Oh.
Laura rose from behind the barrel, Shame building from inside of her.
"Are you gonna tell my dad?" She asked in her tiny little voice.
"Not this time, but if I ever catch you down here again, it'll be straight to your father. Understand?" She nodded.
"Come on." Smolden grabed her hand and snuck her back on deck.
"Where was she?" Her father asked suspiciously.
Laura didn't know what to say.
"Down in the celler captain." Smolden said, saving her from her father's wrath. But something told her that he already knew.

The day went by rather quickly, and because of the occasion, her mother even let her go downstairs to the bar, where she would someday work. As the crew became drunk, her father told Laura off to bed. As the two Made Their Way up the stairs, he tickled her sides and said,
"Before mommy gets undressed for daddy."
Laura skiped to her room, humming a song that the crew was singing below them. As she got cozy in her bed, she felt something in her coat pocket. It was a coin from the ship. Laura knew that if her father or Smolden found out, she would be in louds of trouble, so she tucked it back into her coat and hung it on the rack. The pair then spent the next hour raving about all of the adventures and creatures and friends Laura's father made and found and met along his journey.
"You know, one day, the Cat's Eye will be yours, Laura." He said as he kissed the top of her head, as they exchanged good nights.

Laura woke to yelling.
Her father was yelling, mufflley and it sounded as though her mother was crying. Laura put on her robes, nightgown fluttering at her feet. She grabbed the candle from her nightstand and snuck downstairs to the bar where three drunken guards stood with her father shielding her mother away.
"I will NOT have you degrading a woman, my wife, for that matter, in such matter!" He yelled. That's when Lauren noticed her mother fixing her gown at the top, as if it had been torn off of her body. As she was about to go run to her parents, a hand covered her mouth and snatched her back upstairs.
It was Smolden.
"Laura, this is no time to be snooping around." He said calmly, but somehow stern at the same time.
"I heard yelling." Laura said, biting her nails.
"Don't do that you'll ruin them. Come on, everything's fine, let's get you to bed." Smolden grabed her hand and laid her down in her room.
"Is everything alright with mommy? I saw her fixing her dress... and why was daddy yelling?" She had so many questions.
Smolden just tucked her into bed without responding.
"Good night little Laura."
"Night Smolden."
But Laura didn't sleep that night.
How could she?
Even with all the yelling directly beneath her bed, she still had the coin on her mind.
She grabbed her coat and dug through the pockets until she felt the cold metallic feel the coin gave off. She turned it over and over in her fingers, examining the design. A skull. She bit it once to make sure it was true gold, and in fact it was. She never seen anything like it before. And before she knew it, her eyes had closed, drifting her into a deep sleep. What felt like only minutes later she woke up, and made her way downstairs like she did every morning to greet her mother, and now, father, for breakfast.
"There you are a little birdie!" Her father said, picking her up and spinning her in a circle. "I have good news!"
"What?!" Laura yelled through her giggles.
"You're very kind hearted mother is letting me take you on a two day trip through the Atlantic on the Cat's Eye today!"
Laura jaw dropped. She couldn't hide her excitement!
"Oh, thank you mommy!" She yelled and ran to hug her mother.

Later that day, Laura and the crew board on the boat. Laura was singing and dancing with the rest of the crew as the day came to an end. Once everyone was asleep, Laura snuck to the hatch below deck. She had to return the coin. She knew she couldn't keep it.
Just as she was reaching into her coat pocket to grab the coin, she heard someone behind her.
"And just what do you think you're doing?" Smolden's deep voice asked into the night. Laura was too stunned to speak. He was bound to tell her father this time.
"I-I" was all she managed to get out.
"I cannot believe you, Laura! And, after I explicitly told you not to come down here again! How very disappointed I am in you. Wait until I tell your fa-"
He was suddenly cut off by a large crash above. The ship creaked an swayed. Smolden and Laura brushed up to see a cannon on the ship's deck. Well, rather in the ship's deck.
"Laura, come on!" Smolden grabs her wrist and rushed her to the escape boat.
"LAURA!" Someone called from behind her as she fell overboard into the icy ocean waters.
The last thing she remembered was too small arms, dragging her to the surface above.

"Laura?" Her mother, soft hands caressed her cheek. Laura's eyes slowly opened, revealing an infirmary room around her. It was her, Smolden, and her mother. Laura looked around.
"Wheres daddy?" She squeaked, but the salt in the back of her throat wasn't having it. The two adults exchange glances. Smolden placed his hat to his chest and took a deep breath.
"The Cat's Eye has yet to be sighted... along with the rest of the crew. It's more than likely at the bottom of the great blue by now. Smolden said solemnly.
Her heart dropped.
Her father was lost at sea.
He wasn't dead. He couldn't be.
She refused to belive it.
But she knew deep down that he was.
And she knew that she would never see her daddy again.
