I, Loid Forger

Agent Twilight has always had a crazy sense of being ahead of the curve, almost as if he could guess what people were going to say before they even began to open their mouth. When WISE wanted him to be two steps ahead of their target, he was already a whole block, figuratively (or literally) setting traps right around the corner. Training had prepared him to always be ready for anything. That was one of the things that made him so successful as a spy. That's also why he was so surprised when he didn't see what was planned for him as he arrived to headquarters one early Tuesday morning.

Like usual, Sylvia Sherwood sat across from him at her desk, sipping coffee and glaring in his general direction over her glasses. This part was the predictable part. When he went to headquarters, he expected her. He expected her serious look. However, he could never have expected what she was going to say.

"Agent Twilight, how would you feel about a vacation?"

She had a strange glint in her eye when he sat down across from her. He should have seen it coming. Seen something at least. Maybe then he wouldn't have been so taken aback by her words.

"A vacation?"

His stomach felt cold and heavy. The last vacation he had been on had almost blown up in his face. Quite literally. It seemed like even on the days he was supposed to rest, someone was bugging rooms or hiding bombs. He could never just relax. Especially with the two other people he was obligated to protect.

Loid looked at her, his cold eyes somehow even colder. It was a poker face he had mastered quite well in his time as a spy, but he knew that The Handler could see the confusion in them. She was a spy too, after all.

"Yes. Just a short one. Until we finish Operation Strix."

"What?"

He felt something almost like dread sink to his core. They were no where near done completing the operation. Anya had still yet to be the top of her class, or somehow get him in the same room as her classmate's fascist father. It seemed like every step they took towards success was reversed by some side mission or (although he felt guilty even thinking this) distractions from his "family." He had never been this distracted from a mission in his whole career as a spy. Never before had his fake relationships or personal life gotten so intertwined with his job. That's to say, he's also never had a daughter like Anya and a wife like Yor before.

For fuck's sake, that last part was certain. He has had dozens of fake girlfriends or wives over the years, but none of them could have prepared him for Yor Briar. Or rather, Yor Forger, as she was legally his wife now. He has developed a persona over the years as a womanizer, charismatic with his words, and very charming in every other way. He had fabricated this reputation based on necessity from missions, however, Yor made him forget everything he had learned about maintaining fake relationships. Maybe it was just the situation they were in, almost like they were a real family, but somehow this mission felt different from all the rest. Yor was definitely different from all the rest. His mind flickered back to his previous fake relationship: Karen. She, just like many of the other women he had "dated," did not hesitate to take part in the normal activities that a couple would usually do. While he had found himself in her bed after their second "date,", Yor had been entirely too shy to even spare him a single kiss at all. That was the biggest difference in his missions. While he was expected to use his body to obtain intel in the past, he and Yor now slept in completely different rooms, have never touched one another intimately, and he has never been forced to confess false feelings. That's saying, his feelings for Yor were not like the past. This time, they weren't complete fiction used solely for the objective of maintaining world peace. Their marriage was contractional, mutual, and beneficial for both parties, so Twilight never found himself having to go above and beyond to earn his wife's adoration. What's even worse, she made him shy. Somehow the way her huge crimson eyes scanned his face made him forget all his cool. She made him feel like an inexperienced teenager with his first real chance at love. And maybe that's what this was? His first true love?
