chapter thirteen!

AS SOON AS KAMDEN and Wednesday re-entered the school, however, their happy moods were instantly doused. They found themselves amidst chaos, students pushing past them in a frenzy as they rushed outside, frantic murmurs fluttering through the crowd of something going on outside of school grounds.

After exchanging a confused expression, Kamden and Wednesday pushed their way out the front doors, following the terrified voices and cries coming from one side of the building. They both skidded to a halt when they saw what was playing out before them.

The lawn was ablaze, the scorching flames forming into the shape of a sentence. Those words soon revealed itself to be a threat.

FIRE WILL RAIN.

The letters were burning right there in the grass, clear as day. As she stared at the bright blaze, Kamden felt goosebumps flare up and run down her whole body, a heavy feeling settling into her stomach. She felt almost pulled - drawn - towards the flames.

"Oh my God." She breathed. "How does that even happen?"

"I have no idea." Wednesday responded, stepping away from the heat slowly. "Let's get inside."

Kamden nodded and they hurried back into the safety of the indoors. Wednesday turned to face the redhead. "Meet me in my dorm, tomorrow morning before school."

The following morning, Kamden awoke to her irritatingly loud alarm at the crack of dawn, and she made her way to Wednesday's dorm room. She wasn't surprised in the slightest when Wednesday revealed that she had enough candles to cover the room and illuminate their seance.

As Wednesday set up the wax sticks, Kamden set the wicks on fire with a sharp flick of her wrist. The flames made a warm glow wash over the room and flicker on the walls, and Kamden couldn't help but to remember the blazing yard. She also recalled the feeling that had settled over her, but quickly shook it off to focus on the task at hand.

Wednesday took a seat on the floor in the center of the room, taking a deep breath as she settled. "My mother told me that Goody can help me control my visions. I'm going to try to contact her."

"Have you ever done this before?" Kamden asked, all thoughts of the fire just outside vanishing from her mind. She hugged herself as uneasiness settled over her, slowly realizing what was about to happen.

"No." Wednesday responded, pulling out a long necklace from her pocket. "But how hard can it be?"

Kamden rubbed her hands on her arms, wrapping herself up tighter in her own embrace. Wednesday scoffed at her. "Don't tell me that you're afraid of ghosts."
