"don't say anything that will give your grandma a heart attack." my mom says to me as we walk up to my grandparents door. my mom tries to distance us from her parents because of how different they are from us. i do admire them though, they've gotten themselves very high up just from working hard their entire life. mom made a deal with them that if they paid for chilton, we have to go to their house every friday for dinner.

we knock on the door and after a few seconds, grandma opens the door. "hey grandma." rory and i both say in unison with a slight smile on our face. we walk inside and she takes our coats. "so, i want to hear everything about chilton." she says and wraps her arms around us both, guiding us to the room where my grandpa was in. "richard, look who's here." grandma smiles and grandpa takes his glasses off, "you both have gotten taller." he smiles, "how tall are you girls?" he asks, "5'5" i reply, "5'7" rory says and he nods, going back to reading his newspaper.

grandma hands out a glass of champagne to each of us, "a toast, to rory and adelaide entering chilton. and an exciting new phase in their lives." she holds up her glass and we all toast, this is all too fancy for how we actually live. we all talk for a little bit and then end up sitting in an awkward silence. well it's at least awkward for me, mom, and rory.

after a few minutes, the maid calls us in for dinner. "so, how is chilton girls?" grandpa asks, "it's okay." i shrug, "it's good, i'm thinking of joining the student council." rory explains, "oh that's wonderful rory." grandma smiles.

"have you made any friends adelaide?" she asks as if i'm a toddler. "only one, i don't really like a lot of people there, especially this guy named tristan." i laugh a little. "tristan dugray?" she furrows his eyebrows, "oh uh, how do you know him?" i look at her confused, "oh his family is exceptional! his father goes golfing with richard every sunday." she explains and grandpa nods. "tristan is lovely." she adds, oh definitely.

"adelaide i would love for you to come with me to go golfing, i will tell alexander to bring tristan." grandpa says, "oh that sounds perfect!" grandma smiles, not wanting to let them down; i say yes. i felt bad to say no but i already know i'm going to regret saying yes. they've already paid way too much for the school, i'm not going to be able to say no to them for a while.

"lorelai is the executive manager now isn't that wonderful?" grandma smiles after they brought up the inn. speaking of which, christopher called yesterday." grandpa says out of the blue, "speaking of which? how is that speaking of which?" mom replies annoyed. christopher is my dad, we basically never see him and i've been fine without him. somehow he always just pops up out of nowhere back into our lives.

"he's doing very well in california. his internet startup goes public next month, this could mean big things for him. very talented man you girls father." he explains, "they know." mom says bluntly, "he always was a smart one that boy, y'all must take after him." he adds. even the mention of my dad puts me in a bad mood. i've never liked talking about him. he has never been there when i needed a father figure so after i finally came to the realization it would always be like that, i just shut him out.

"speaking of which, i'm gonna get a coke." mom says, "or a knife." she adds and gets out of her chair, "i'm coming with." i state and get up from the table, leaving the awkwardness that was left at the table.

we walk into the kitchen together and i can tell she's on the verge of crying. "mom don't cry." i frown rubbing her shoulder, "i'm fine, it's okay." she smiles which i could immediately tell was fake. "let's just go home." i say and she nods, "luke's first?" she asks and i nod, "oh a hundred percent." i laugh and squeeze her hand. "i'm gonna just take a breather in here, go get our coats and tell rory." she says and i nod.

when i get back to the dining room, grandma gets up from the table and walks into the kitchen. "rory, we're going to go." i say, "why so soon?" grandpa asks, "me and mom aren't feeling too good, i think we caught a stomach bug or something." i lie to him, "oh, well alright. call me if you need a doctor, i know the best." he smiles and i nod, "thank you grandpa." i smile back and grab my phone from the table.

after about ten minutes, grandma and mom finally finished talking; and grandpa had fallen asleep at the table. mom still looked upset but relieved we were finally leaving. "it was nice seeing you two." grandma smiles at rory and i, "bye grandma." we both say smiling back at her.

"we were doing fine without him." i say getting into the car, "you know your dad, he always does this." mom sighs, i lay my head against the window. "are we going to lukes?" rory asks, "yes, i need my coffee." mom laughs a little.

"luke!" mom drags out his name while we walk into the diner, "three coffee's?" he asks, "you know us so well." i smile sitting at the counter. he hands us our coffee's and him and mom start talking to each other.

"they'd be good together." i whisper to rory smiling at the two. luke makes mom smile a lot, and she makes him. luke is never super cheery but when it comes to mom, she can make him smile no matter what. they've known each other for longer than i can remember. "i think they don't know that their perfect for each other yet." rory replies and i nod, "they need to figure it out asap." i laugh and take a sip of my coffee.

"what's so funny over there?" luke asks,

"girl stuff."
