Niae could never understand why Lo'ak was so eager to be in the chaos of this train derailment. She, herself, preferred to stay right in the sky on lookout as her dad asked of her.
She watched from the back of her Ikran, Pa'it, as planes exploded and her mother shot arrows at the planes around them. On the ground, her father and the other warriors of the clan cheered as they derailed the human train and began taking and distributing the weapons among each other.
She circled around the wreckage a few more times, her blue eyes scanning the horizons for any planes.
Taking her eyes off of the wreckage for a second, she was startled to see that neither of her brothers was around her. Her ears twitched and her tail lashed nervously as she glanced around for them frantically. Not spotting them, she turned her gaze to the ground. But she couldn't spot anything through the smoke and absolute chair of what was going on down there.
With no other choice, she touched her neck to activate her ear piece.
"Dad," She called into the device, her eyes scanning the chaos below for even a brief glimpse of her brothers. She could believe Lo'ak doing this but Neteyam was usually very responsible. He probably wen down to keep an eye on Lo'ak again. What a troublesome little brother they had. "Dad, it's Niae."
"Niae, I read you." Jake's voice sounded into her ear, slightly out of breath.
"Dad, Neteyam and Lo'ak are gone. They aren't up here with me. I turned away for a second." Niae responded, her heartbeat loud in her ears. Where were they?
"Shit. Stay where you are. You hear me? Don't move, I'll find your brothers." Jake stated, grimly as he began to look around for his two sons. He moved around some of the warriors who were passing guns out to the others. He found them in a second, Lo'ak holding a gun as Neteyam shook his head beside him. Jake's brows furrowed in anger that they disobeyed what he asked them to do.
"Dad! Watch out!" Niae screamed into his ear, just as a middle was fired from a plan that spun around the corner behind him. With a curse, Jake ran to protect his sons while talking to his daughter, " Niae, go! Fall back!"
"I'm going!" Niae responded, commanding Pa'it into a sharp turn and ascent. She yelped as a searing pain shot through her back, breaking her focus and causing Pa'it to swerve dangerously close to a mountain. Steadying her Ikran, she panted harshly as the pain faded as quickly as it came. She had completely missed the second missile heading for her brothers in her panic to escape the planes. She turned just in time to hear her mother whoop as she shot the pilot with an arrow, sending it careening into the side of the mountain she had almost crashed into earlier.
With the threat taken care of, she directed Pa'it into a steep turn so she could see what was happening on the ground. She could see Lo'ak looking around at the wreckage around him in a daze.
"Lo'ak are you okay?!" She called into her headset, panting harshly. She could see him press his hand to his neck slowly, as though finally realizing how close he could have been to death.
"Yeah...yeah, I'm okay." He breathed, looking around.
"Good. Because when we get home, I'm going to kill you!" She huffed, angrily, "You scared me to death-both of you! What were you thinking?!" He could have gotten himself AND her twin killed. Skxawng!
As she seethed internally, she was her father amble up in the distance with Neteyam slung over his back letting out grunts of pain. A similar pain she could fee faintly in her own back. As she focused on the two approaching, Lo'ak took his chance to mount his Ikran and fly off, not wanting to get into any more trouble than he already would be getting into.
"Dad, is he okay?!" She asked, worriedly, rushing over to run her hands over her brother's shoulder. Neteyam let out a grunt as Jake shifter him from his back, " He's going to be fine. I need you to take him home on your Ikran."
Turning around, she called to Pa'it, the light female coming immediately to her side. With the help of their father, she held Neteyam firmly to prevent him from falling off as she directed Pa'it into flight.
"Ugh, I'm so sore." Neteyam complained with a small smirk on his face. Probably trying to joke his pain away.
She rolled her eyes at him, lightly slapping his arm and causing him to hiss.
"You two are skxawngs!" Niae hissed, her ears pulled back. She couldn't believe he was joking about his pain after being injured and unable to ride his Ikran back. Eywa save her from the stupidity of her brothers!
As she flew them back home she couldn't help but think about how bad they would all get scolded. Lo'ak for getting into trouble...again, and she and Neteyam for allowing him to get into trouble in the first place.
"We're going to get scolded again. Stupid Lo'ak." She grumbled under her breath, causing Neteyam to let out a small sigh in agreement.
She looked around as her mother whooped from behind her, only for Lo'ak to to come up beside them on his Ikran. Her mother pulled up on their other side with a frown and furrowed brows. The classic signs of her frustration at her kids. Her eyes spoke what she didn't have to: we will talk when we get home.
Niae turned to glare at her younger brother. Once again, his recklessness had gotten one of them hurt and gotten them all in trouble. He met her eyes with a flinch before looking away quickly, urging his Ikran ahead of her to avoid her gaze.
She rolled her eyes once more in exasperation. Brothers.
