The crossed-out words throughout the story are exactly that; the little voice inside Clary's head, the thoughts that she doesn't want to believe or that are impossible to her. It's the chaos of it all. The things that she doesn't want to think about. The things she's trying to forget. The errors, the mistakes in her life coming back to haunt her in her mind. The thoughts that she crosses out.
