"Woah, this place is heavenly." Kairi said while taking a biscuit from the shelf and opening it.

"Hold on, isn't this illegal?" Tatta asked, and he snatched the food away from her hands.

The two were currently in a convenience store scavenging for food. Putting aside the rotten smell of the food on the displays and freezers, everything else looked fine enough to consume.

"Hey, I was going to eat that! And besides, who are we supposed to pay? The cashier ghost? It's a free-for-all, go take anything. I'm pretty sure you're hungry too." She took the biscuit back before continuing to look for more food.

Tatta hesitantly took a bar of chocolate and a random cracker, still feeling a little weird about just grabbing anything and leaving. Kairi had a point though, there was no one around to pay, so it was technically free.

After eating plenty of unhealthy snacks, the two carried on to find anything else that could help them.

The only thing providing them light was the lovely moon, which wasn't much help when they were inside buildings.

They were currently in the middle of the street, back to where they met.

"I can barely see anything besides you." Kairi complained, and Tatta looked at her confused. "What's wrong with me?" He asked.

As if the gods heard her complaints, a huge LED screen lit up from a building.

"Look." She pointed at the screen, and the two looked at it with curiosity.

'WELCOME, PLAYERS
THE GAME WILL COMMENCE IN A MOMENT.'

"Game?" Tatta asked, and the screen displayed another message.

'THIS WAY TO THE GAME ARENA.'

It showed an arrow pointing to the left, and they looked in that direction. A building with multiple floors lit up.

"Do you think there's anyone else there?" He asked.

"I don't know, but it's worth a shot going there to see." She replied before walking away.

"Wait, investigating sounds like a bad idea!" He followed after her, trying to convince the girl to stop walking.

"Enough of the horror movie cliches, we can't miss this chance. There's electricity there!" She told him while walking even faster.

"If we die, I'm blaming you." He replied in an annoyed tone.

Why was he so adamant about coming with her anyways? It's not like they were lifelong friends who always stuck together.

The two finally arrived at the place which was an apartment building, and there were actual people to their relief. In the area were eight other people excluding them.

'ONE PER PERSON.'

She mentally read the sign on the table, and she took two phones, handing the other one to Tatta.

Kairi opened the phone, and a facial recognition text showed up on the screen. On the top left were two apps named 'Game' and 'VISA'.

The screen flashed white again, but this time it showed a timer.

'THERE ARE CURRENTLY TEN PARTICIPANTS.
Please wait until the game commences.
Two minutes until the registration closes.'

Another person entered the building, and she took a phone too. Tatta walked to her, "Excuse me. Where did all the people in Tokyo go?" He asked.

"Watch out." Kairi whispered while tugging on his shirt, and the two moved away to the side. A muscular man entered the building, and he definitely looked intimidating.

"This thing–" He walked back to the woman to continue asking, but was unfortunately interrupted again.

Damn, was his luck really that bad?

The two new people picked up a phone each, and it made a sound after a couple of seconds.

'Registration has closed.
There are a total of 14 participants.
The game will now commence.'

"Excuse me. Just what is this? We ended up here. I have no idea what's going on." Tatta went back to asking people, and this time he went to the new guy with very disheveled hair.

The guy looked at Kairi, assuming she was the person he was with.

"It's a game." He replied, and his friend stopped and scolded him before whispering something.

That was a bit rude.

'Difficulty, Five of Spades.'

"What does that mean?" Kairi asked, and a man with a black fedora came to her with a huge grin.

"It's a physical game. Strength is everything here. I'm Nitobe, nice to meet you." He introduced himself while holding his hand out.

"Kairi." She politely shook his hand, and Tatta looked at her with shock.

Why the heck would she give him her name back? The man looked nothing but suspicious!

"Each mark has a different meaning?" The guy who answered Tatta earlier joined in on the conversation.

"Exactly! The mark on a trump card signifies the game's genre. Club refers to a team battle, and Diamond refers to a battle of wits. As for heart... it's the most troublesome one." He informed while getting awfully close to the poor guy.

"Troublesome?" He repeated with a questioning look.

"It's a game of betrayal where you play with people's hearts." Nitobe replied.

"And the numbers?" Kairi asked, and Nitobe turned back to her. "The difficulty level. The larger the number, the harder it is to clear." He explained, and she slightly backed away.

Did he not know what personal space was?

'Game, a "Game of Tag."
Rule. Run away from the tagger.
Clear condition. Discover the safe zone hidden in one of the building rooms within the time limit. You clear the game when this objective is fulfilled.
Time limit, 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, the time bomb hidden in the building will explode.'

They were gonna play a DEADLY kid's game?
