Emilia didn't mean to, but she must have dozed off, because she was awoken by a shout.
She already know what was happening. The Dauntless were jumping off of the train. And onto... A roof?
That was new. But she, Beatrice and Christine were on their feet in seconds. They didn't want to be left out, and possibly fail initiation.
The three of them watched, as the rooftop grew nearer and nearer. She felt Christina hold out her hand, and gratefully took it. As much as she was experienced at this, it was never onto a rooftop. Plus, she was kind of afraid of heights.
The weightless feeling was normal, but the hard landing was not. Christina and Beatrice must have lost their balance, because Emilia found herself getting pulled to the ground by their weight.
"That was fun," Christina laughed. Beatrice was examining her elbow, a little scraped but not bleeding, when a boy's voice chortled.
"Oh look, stiff's showing some skin!"
It was the tall Candor from earlier.
"Oh, do me a favor Candor," Emilia hissed at him. "Hike up to your ego, jump down to your IQ, and knock yourself out."
A few other initiates laughed and "oohed" but the Candor didn't take that as very offensive. At least, it didn't seem like it, because all he did was shrug, good-naturedly, and walk off.
"Don't mind Peter, he's a big idiot," Christina said, as they stood up and brushed themselves off.
"Listen up! My name is Max!" A man on the other side of the roof yells. "I am one of the leaders of your new faction! Several stories below us," he points to the edge of the rooftop. "Is the member's entrance to our compound. IF you can't muster the will to jump off, you don't belong here. Our initiates have the privilege of going first."
Emilia didn't think that the Dauntless were keen of killing off their initiates. Apparently, though, she was wrong about that.
No one steps forward. Then Beatrice, next to me, steps forward. The initiates all make a clear path for her. And the stands at the rooftop.
"Today, initiate," someone Emilia can't see growls.
Tris takes off her gray sweater.
"YEah stiff, take it off! Put up back on, hahah..."
She takes the ball of fabric and hurls it at the Candor boy. It hits him in the chest. And then Tris jumps.
"Next!" Max yells.
No one steps forward, once more.
Emilia swallows hard. She finds herself moving forward, to the ledge.
The pit below seems bottomless, and plunges into darkness.
Emilia takes a breath, turns around so her back is to the pit, and falls backwards.
She manipulates her body to spin around. And then she lands, stomach-first, onto a rope net, knocking the wind right out of her.
She just did a flip in mid-air, fell several stories down, and did not die. A hysterical laugh bubbled in her throat, and she let it out.
A young man with short hair pulled her out. "What's your name?"
Emilia thought for just a second. Emilia was no more. It was now Emi. "Emi," she said.
"Second jumper, Emi!" A girl across from him announced. A crowd materialized from the darkness, and cheered some more.
"Welcome to Dauntless, Emi!" The girl grins at her.
