The Letter

Mahiru'd been sitting in the living room staring at a piece of paper for 5 whole minutes now.

Kuro was getting more worried by the second. He couldn't even focus on his game as he lay on the floor facing away from his eve.

Having had enough Kuro turned around and asked, "Mahiru...?"

Mahiru jumped so badly he almost dropped the letter. "Ah- Kuro? Something wrong?" he replied.

"You," Kuro retorted. "Something's wrong with you. You've been sitting in the same spot staring at that letter for 5 minutes now don't think I haven't noticed just because I'm gaming."

Mahiru smiled awkwardly and mumbled, "Ah hahaha... I guess you've caught me Kuro."

"Is something wrong with the letter?" Kuro asked. "Are you okay?"

"I'm okay thanks Kuro I just... I gotta group call Sakuya and Licht-san and Niccolo-san," Mahiru replied. He stood up and handed Kuro the letter. "Here. You can read it. Please don't worry about me."

He left the room.

Kuro read the letter.

Shirota Mahiru,

I've learned of you taking over the body of Suko Masaaki. I understand you didn't mean to and would like to talk to you about it alone. Could you meet us in 2 days' time where Masaaki first met the servamp of sloth? You won't need to ask anyone where that was- you will know. Remember to come alone.

There was no sign off.

...Kuro didn't trust this even a little.

He grabbed a lemon from the kitchen and squeezed its juice on the letter. He then went back and held the paper up so the ceiling light shone through- it should reveal any secret writing on the letter, an emblem or any sign of who had sent it that the writer didn't want them to know.

Nothing.

Kuro scanned every letter written on the paper for anything that didn't look right- maybe a code hidden in the shapes, in missing or extra pen strokes or weird phrasings.

No result.

Frowning, he turned the letter upside down, looking for some kinda pattern in the paper's wrinkles.

There was a chuckle in the doorway. "Kuro that's not gonna do anything."

Kuro jumped and turned to see his eve in the doorway, smiling at him. He rubbed the back of his neck and mumbled embarassedly, "Mahiru..."

Mahiru sat down next to Kuro.

"So... what're you gonna do about this?" Kuro asked.

"I'm gonna go meet them," Mahiru declared. "Just as requested."

"You told the cabbage head, the violent angel and the mob boss right? What do they think?"

"They're kinda worried I'm going alone but they agreed."

Kuro snorted. "They shouldn't be worried," he replird. "I'm not gonna let anything happen to-"

"Kuro."

"Hm?"

"The letter says alone."

"Yeah and we're going alone."

"No I'm going alone."

It took a long minute for Kuro to realize what Mahiru meant.

"You're not serious," he stated blankly, turning to face his partner properly. "You're not really gonna go meet this person without me."
