Two chapters published in the span of not even two days? what is this? 😂 I hope y'all like these new chapters - the book may be ending before too long 😏:)
The following morning, we awake around 6 AM, the base buzzing with energy and nervousness from everyone, new trainees and seasoned soldiers alike. But for once in my life, I woke up feeling... confident. Still nervous, but readily confident nonetheless. I get dressed and head down to the dining area of the Commons where the tables are filled with people eating breakfast, drinking coffee, and trying to distract themselves from the inevitable danger ahead of them. I look around, as this was my first time really having a chance to take in the structure of the base. The energy within the space and how everyone trusts each other, whether we know each other or not. We have all come from different backgrounds and ability groups, yet we are still all here together. Laughing together. Fearing together. All united with a central cause. I grab myself a cup of iced coffee and a bagel then move to find a table to sit at while I wait for the others to make their way downstairs.
"How are you feeling?" I hear a voice say behind me, close to my ear, clearly intended for me. I look over my shoulder to see Matthew with a small, sympathetic smile on his face. I have only ever seen him look this off before and that was when we got into a huge fight about me not telling him and Hadley that I am a Rarity, but now it is different. Deep in the depths of his eyes, he looks... scared. He is trying so hard to fight it but I know he is struggling.
"Yeah, I'm okay. How are you? Like, with all of this? I bet this isn't what you signed up for and we haven't really had the chance to talk a bunch since our 'fight'." I say, thinking about how I haven't really had a moment with just Matthew and me.
" Yeah no, uh. I mean I've been better, of course. Still adjusting to the idea that we are about to be fighting today. And we never even finished training." Matthew says, his voice noticeably shaky.
"Look, you know you don't have to to this right? If you wanted to leave I wouldn't blame you. I mean, I'm terrified."
"No, I want to be here. I'm scared and stressed out, you know? But, I want to be here though, I promise. You are one of my best friends Raven, I would never do that to you."Matthew says, offering me a soft smile.
"You one one of my best friends too, Matthew. I'm just sorry you are risking everything for this cause, you know? I just don't want you to regret anything."
"I wouldn't have done it was gonna regret it okay? Don't worry. I'm doing what is right, and that's all I want." He says, smiling at me and I smile back. We sit there in comfortable silence eating our food when Hadley walks up to join us with her food.
"Good morning my wonderful besties! How are you this morning?" says with a bright smile on her face.
" Hadley, you know you don't have to be positive, we are literally about to to be fighting in a Revolution, your don't need to mask for anyone. We are all terrified."I see to her, knowing my best friend all too well at this point.
She sighs and collapses into the chair me. "Oh thank God! I don't know how long I would have been able to keep that up. How are you guys doing though? Honestly."
"We are okay, scared but okay. This is just really different from where I thought we would be a week ago. Even a few days ago!" Matthew answers her honestly.
"Seriously though! This not where I was expecting to be right now! I thought we would be at the compound still doing boring training. Not this is the best situation but it's definitely not the worst. And as scared as I am, I'm honestly kinda excited to get some real experience with our magic." Hadley says with a little giggle.
