Chapter 14: It's all in the numbers

Several miles away...

"Yo, Maverick!" Antowne called, pulling off the blue plastic vest and wrapping it in a ball.

"Who the hell you calling Maverick? You think you my momma or somettin'? Name's Marv, stupid ass boy!" Marv snapped back annoyed, taking off his vest.

Both young men were making their way out to the employees parking lot of the store. Both tired and annoyed, of course.

"So, y'all playing tonight?" Antwone asked, after both exchanged giggles.

"Nah! Coach got hella mad at us. Moved it to next weekend."

BZZZZT BZZZZZT

Marv felt the vibrating cell in his pocket and dug his hand in it.

"For real? What y'all dumbasses do?" Antwone asked, stopping by his car, which was right next to Marv's.

"I ain't no dumbass. Some homies got caught with pot in the locker room. Coach got mad as hell! Called the game off and gave em a warning." Marv took a quick look and frowned. "Yo! I catch ya later." he said stepping in and closing the door. Antwone got in and sped off, while he clicked on the screen.

Marv, please help. I can't call anyone, they'll hear. We're trapped. Guys in bikes with automatics! They took Miss Helen. Help!

What the hell? Marv thought, completely lost. He went over the message again and again, but couldn't understand. How could they be trapped if they were going to see a shrink?

BZZZT BZZZZT

I'm running low on bat. Guys are really close. Please tell OLuca. Help!

Before he could do anything or even start the car, his phone went off.

RIIIIIING RIIIIIINGGG

"Hello?" Marv answered, still out of it because of the texts.

"Marv! Marv! Kelly just sent a message. They're in trouble!" Chen called desperately.

"I got em messages, but I 'ont understand. Wasn't they meeting a lady to help Kelly out?"

"I don't get it either. I've called Tan over and over, but he wont pick up." Chen said, breathing fast. He seemed to be on the move.

BEEEP BEEEP

"Hold up! I got an incoming call."

"Hurry, we gotta help them Marv!"

"Give me a sec!"

CLICK

"Yo!"

"Marv! Leyla! Kelly and she are scared!" Rubio called desperately.

"Aight, hold up!" Marv said, pulling the cell away from his face.

CLICK

"Yo, Rubio! Chen's on the line too." Marv called.

"Guys, we gotta help them. They said they're hiding from some guys with guns!" Rubio said desperately.

"Kelly texted you too?" Chen added

"C'mon, Marv! Let's find them!" Rubio urged.

"How? Did they tell you where they was going?" Marv asked.

"No! They tell you?" Rubio responded.

"No!" both teenagers answered.

"¡Eah rayo!" (Oh no!) Rubio lamented. "And I can't call my pops or Tío Cosa -I mean, Officer Luca- coz they're in a big meeting. My pops said this morning, their bosses and big people of the police are meeting with them. They are in trouble, maybe."
