chapter 2

Around three in the morning Hailey woke up with a splitting headache, she could sense that it was raining outside as she could here small thumps falling onto the glass door that led to the balcony.

Looking over beside her she saw the Ethan sleeping peacefully next to her. He looked like a teddy bear, all sweet and innocent. The person she wished to see but instead got his dark side.

Sitting up slowly she looked down at her legs and arms, full of bruises, more bruises than she could count with her own two hands.

Cupping her hands on her head for a short moment before removing them she looked behind her letting out a muted sigh.

She carefully stood up trying not to wake Ethan but also she didn't want her legs to give out as it's the last thing she needed.

Grabbing her phone Hailey tiptoed her way to their messy bathroom, flicking on the light and shutting the door behind her she wobbled over to the sink and placed both hands down on the edge.

"You got this." she said to herself as she looked into the mirror. Her face was covered with more bruises than she's ever seen on herself.

Since it was only three-forty five in the morning Hailey remembered Jay telling her he would be at work all night and that she could call him if she needed anything.

Looking back and forth between the mirror and her phone she decided to get ready for work, she opened the door to the glass mirror and took out her almost empty bottle of concealer squirting some out onto her makeup sponge.

When she was finished covering every dark spot of the new bruises and old bruises along her face and lower arms, she looked like the person she was before all of this and that's what made people think she was totally fine.

Hailey wandered off into their medium sized closet and put on a pair of her favorite pair of blue jeans with a tight green top and topped it off with her grey hoodie.

She carefully set her gun into her holster all while not trying to wake Ethan, leaving a note by his nightstand praying he'll wake up and see it she walked out of their apartment.

Taking a deep loud exhale when she entered her car she grabbed her phone and called Jay.

Three rings went by when he finally picked up, "Hey Hailey.." he said but Hailey quickly interrupted him, "Jay, I'm on my way to the district, uh are you still there?" she said quickly while making her way in the car.

"Yeah I am, I'll be here all day." he said, "Thanks ehm i'll be there soon." Hailey said and hung up the phone to finish her drive.

Walking up the stairs Jay sat in his chair half asleep, "Boo!" Hailey said scaring the daylights out of him. The two busted out into laughter and her smile was real again.

Sitting down at her desk across from her partner, Jay couldn't help but notice Haileys zoning out. "Hails come here, bring you're stuff." he said tapping his desk next to him.

Grabbing some files she rolled over and set them next to him on his desk The two detectives helped each other with filling case filed out.

Jay soon began to speak, "Hailey, what's going on?" taking his eyes off his papers to look into hers trying to find the answer. Usually he could tell but this one what the reason was, but he couldn't get a hold on what was hurting her.

"I couldn't sleep, I get those nights and I just need to distract my mind." She said, not completely lying but also not telling the full truth.

"I'm here for you, you know that right? And I care for you with my whole heart." he said reassuring her, "Thanks." he got in response as they both gave a smile before working side by side, making jokes, and enjoying their time together.

It was now around five and Hailey was starting to get a little sleepy, "Want coffee?" she questioned, "I'll pass." Jay replied.

Hailey sat up and went to the room to make coffee, she left her phone on the desk and it kept buzzing. Jay knew he should leave it to keep the privacy but was seeing all caps continuously come through.

"Hailey!" Jay said shouted but not too loud. Hailey ran out with her coffee still in her hands attempting not to spill it, "What's up?" she asked.

"Ethan, he's blowing up your phone." Jay stated looking back to Hailey and handed her phone which she looked through the 20 different messages with multiple different  angry sayings.

"I've gotta go, i'll be back in a bit." She said rushing out of the district not giving Jay anytime to say anything.

When Hailey pulled up to her apartment Ethan was already waiting outside looking for her, pacing back and forth when she walked up to him he grabbed her arm right away forcing her to go into their place.

"Where the hell were you?" he roared, "Did you not see the note I left you?!" Hailey was fed up with everything and just wanted to finish this by leaving.

"You didn't leave me a note.." Ethan yelled but shortly after Hailey interrupted him "Yes I did!! Look Ethan I'm tired of this, you're using me for my body and I know you are, I mean you won't live with this forever!" She argued which made him more pissed off.

"What won't be forever is you." Ethan grunted under his breath taking out a knife that was in his jean pocket, "Ethan.. no.." Hailey said backing away towards the door.

"Bedroom now." He ordered which Hailey obeyed because who knows what he would do if she didn't. He undressed her leaving her in just her underwear. So there he began his show, touching her, playing with her, treating her like an animal who has no reason to live.

Hailey was now a a complete mess, she was seeing stars by all the things Ethan did to her and didn't realize the pain from all the bruises until she looked down to see the knife laid in her stomach.

Slowly she felt her pulse slow, her mind kept going black and then normal, she needed someone to save her before she stopped breathing. Her phone kept ringing and she saw Jays name pop up on the screen but she didn't have the strength to make her way to her phone.

Her pulse became weaker, her head laid back onto the pillows when she heard the door being kicked open to their apartment.
