I don't want to write about last night. I don't need to. It's stained in my mind forever like someone tattooed it inside my head.

I woke up the next morning feeling queasy. Saliva was filling up my; mouth so I ran to the toilet, getting ready to vomit. I didn't. I looked at my phone for the time and noticed it was quarter to six. About two more hours till the start of school. I woke up my mum and told her I didn't want to go to school.

She quickly agreed, knowing what had happened last night. After my breakfast of pancakes (since my mum was trying to cheer me up) I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and noticed the big blue bruise on my face. It was turning a slight raisin purple around the edges. I prodded it gently and felt a little shock of pain flow through my body.

A couple hours later, Marie turned up at my house. My mum had asked if she could come over just to keep me company. I was surprised her mum had let her come over, even though it was a school day. Even though I was happy my best friend was over, I was strangely scared and embarrassed. I felt self-conscious. She knew what had happened. It was like she was there. We walked upstairs to my room. I've always known Marie loves my room.

We slumped on my bed and just started talking. Then I decided to pull out the book.

The spell book.

I opened it, expecting the spells and potions I had seen yesterday but
there was nothing. Marie looked at me, visibly confused. I knew she believed me. I turned a few pages. On about the fiftieth page we both shared looks. We had noticed the same thing. There were a few doodles on the page. I started to read them out loud, moving my finger along with the words.

"Esme Shallows, 18th May, 1987 ?" I whispered.

"Who's Esme? Did you write that?" Marie asked.

"I haven't seen that before. Someone must have had this before."

"1987 was 31 years ago? Other people may have had it other than her. Where did you get this book?"

I shrugged, "I don't know," I tried remembering where I had got it, "I just found it on the shelf in the lounge. I had never seen it before..."

Marie snatched the book away from me and started looking through the pages. Suddenly, we noticed words appear.

"Be careful," Marie started to read it as it appeared, "I miss you. Come home, please, come home. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that. I love you. Love from Esme."

I grabbed my phone and started taking photos.

"Perhaps she's from England. Here! Maybe she's still alive?" I said excitedly.

"Where though, it's not like we can search door-to-door?"

That's when the pages started to move and flicker to a page.

"Location Potion?" We both said at the same time. I tugged the book back from Marie. I had figured it out.

"I know, spells appear when you need them!" I had found out the way the book worked!

"Then why did spells appear last night?"

I thought back on the night. Mind reading, Invisibility, Force Fields, were all part of the things I had read.

"They were spells for the things I had wanted most at the time - protection, invisibility and the chance to know what people felt about me and what was going on!"

The day had gone past quickly. We spent it snacking on biscuits and researching 'Esme Shallow 1987'. Nothing came up. Then I looked up 'Shallow 1987' . A man came up.
