Opening the door I shouted, "Dad I'm home!" No one responded. Which wasn't weird at all, my father was never the stay-at-home type. Sure he would clean the house from time to time then fly off to another country the next day. He is a workaholic, I can not say I'm proud of his life choice but this beats mourning by any means necessary. Our house was a two-story building well furnished with a sofa, flat screen TV, some kitchen appliances such as a toaster, and even a pool. I call that good middle-class living.

I ran up the Yellow lime green colored stairs and entered my room. Not the cleanest place in the world but it was still liveable as long as my bed was not infested with bugs. A kid needs his nights of sleep once in a while. I lunged on top of my bed flat pancake style. I took a moment to let my world sink in, what a day it was lifting my head and staring at my Dean martin posters. I sunk deep into it and read my favorite song caption, "That's life". I laid my head down again, my eyesight blurred, and went straight to sleep.

My eyes opened again when I heard the sound of glass breaking. Disorientated I woke up slowly not realizing until I had both feet dangling. The sound came from downstairs, at first I thought dad came home early but this was way too early even when I checked the time, 2 AM.

So I thought to myself I left a window open and the wind must have broke something while I was sleeping. Subconsciously I got off my bed and exited my room at the edge of the stairs. The moment I walked on the first step I heard whispers. I froze. Dad never brings people over, he does not trust people easily. Work habit he says never giving a second opinion on his own biological son. I barely have friends.

Knowing this I backed away slowly into the hallway's shadow and sat back against the wall to listen carefully. The sounds of cabinets opening gave me a rough idea of what was going on. A robbery? Today of all days? Lord give me a break.
