NORMAL TIME:

Ralph nodded along as the lady behind the desk pointed out key features on a map and obediently signed his name when asked, but his thoughts were everywhere but on the task ahead of him, so when he got out of the office and looked down at the time table to find his first lesson, he found himself wishing even more he had Jack here to guide him. Jack had been good at this sort of thing. Knowing how to navigate large areas and memorize maps. That was Jack's area of expertise. Not his. The ache of abandonment Ralph felt sat like a brick in his stomach all day, no one daring to talk to him when he finally found his first class, 20 minutes late, and no one questioning his decision to sit alone. The emotionlessness on his face was enough to scare even the few braver ones away. So, when it got to the last lesson, a free period, having not eaten all day, he was surprised when a blonde, bouncy girl, a lot like Monica, slid into the seat next to him offering a Mars bar.
"You must be hungry," She giggled absentmindedly, ignoring the stares of other people, "Saw you not eating at lunch. Jack Merridew break your heart?" The mention of his name brought Ralph slamming back to reality.
"How do you know?" Her eyes lit up with new found knowledge and Ralph cursed inwardly as he realized what he'd just admitted too.
"Jack texted me to say I should look out for a new guy named Ralph, which, I figure is you. But considering he's not here looking after you himself, I reckon there's some bad blood between you. Oh, and you smell off his cologne." The blonde waved a long red nail at him, "So what did you do?" Ralph took a moment to sniff at his shirt. It was true. He really did have a bit of Jack's scent on him. It must have been from earlier.
"I didn't do anything." Ralph ran a hand through his hair.
"No, seriously. What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything!" He repeated.
"Oooooh." She grinned, "So you wouldn't put out? Is that why he's annoyed? Have we got ourselves a virgin?"
"Leave me alone."
"Touchy subject?" This just seemed to make her happier, "That's adorable. Do I need to find you a gay guy to practice on?"
"I'm not gay."
"You just-"
"Ask my girlfriend." Ralph waved his mobile infront of the blonde, who tried to snatch for it immediately and then pouted when he tucked it into his waist band.
"Just because you have a girlfriend doesn't make you not gay," The blonde pointed out, "Considering Jack Merridew was dating me when he 'outed', I can vouch for that. You could be using her as a cover up."
"Why the trivia?"
"Jack Merridew is poison. Stay away from him, sweetie." Did she seriously just call him sweetie? Apparently, yes. He resisted the urge to stick his tongue out in a juvenile way.
"No need to worry about that. I'm not gay." Ralph replied instead.
"But Jack Merridew still managed to break your heart?" She raised a perfectly plucked eyebrow.
"He was my only friend here and he abandoned me. I think there's a difference between that and me not 'putting out'."
"So you wouldn't put out?"
"What?" Ralph snapped, getting exasperated now.
"If you'll excuse me, I have to go talk to my friends. If you're not gay, I'm sure one of them will strip you of your virtue. Consider it a favour from me."
"I don't want a favour from you."
"So you'll find a girl by yourself will you?"
"I have Monica."
"Your girlfriend?"
"Yes."
"Why haven't you had sex yet?"
"It's complicated."
"It's because you're gay, isn't it?"
"I'm not gay!"
"Fine. Do me a favour and ring Jack and tell him you're breaking up with him."
"I'm not breaking up with Jack!"
"So you are going out?"
"No!"
"Call him." She slid a rhinestoned phone towards him, "7 on speeddial." Ralph rolled his eyes and dialed. Might as well get this over with.
"Heidi?" Jack's suspicious voice answered almost as quickly as the phone connected.
"No, um. It's me." The silence on the end of the phone suggested Jack knew exactly who 'me' was. "Heidi said... Um."
"What's she making you do?" Heidi reached over and turned off the microphone,
"I've changed my mind." She said, popping gum, "Tell him he's a freak instead. That would be way funnier."
"What are you going to do if I don't?"
"Make your life hell." She smiled sweetly, and unmuted the phone, "Go on." She whispered. Ralph raised the phone to his ear,
"Ralph? Hello? Are you there?"
"Um. Hi. Jack."
"Ralph! I thought she'd killed you."
"Would you care?" Ralph muttered darkly.
"What?"
"You left me on my own!"
"I think I had good enough reason too."
"You didn't let me say what I wanted!"
"I've heard it all before. I'm a freak. A physcopath. A murderer. I'm gay. I'm disgusting. Whatever."
"I wasn't going to say the that!"
"Oh yeah? What is Heidi getting you to call me?"
"A freak, but-" Heidi's face lit up, having only heard one side of the conversation.
"Do you agree with her?"
"No! Of course not!" Jack's heavy sigh radiated through the phone, turning Ralph cold.
"Yet what was it you were saying earlier?"
"Jack, please."
"I don't owe you anything."
"Give me a chance to talk!"
"I did, and you threw it back in my face!"
"Give me a chance to apologize then."
"Huh?"
"7pm, Farklands Park, tonight. I'll be there. I'll wait all night if I have too." And Ralph hung up. Heidi seemed delighted.
"Have I messed things up between you?" She asked, biting her lip as if she actually cared.
"Yes, you've fucked it all up!" Ralph faked a glare. In truth, Heidi had given him an opportunity to see Jack again. One that he wouldn't miss for the world.
"What's happening at Farklands then?" Twirling a blonde lock around her finger, Heidi actually seemed generally intrigued.
"I'm... I'm telling him the truth."
"Which is?"
"I'm not gay."
"OOH, can I come?"
"I wouldn't be able to stop you anyway."
"Oh shit. I can't. I have a hairdressers."
"Real shame, that." Ralph's heart exploded happily but his face gave nothing away. "If we're besties, I'll tell you everything that happens."
"We're besties!" Heidi bounced up and down and threw the brunette's phone back. "I put my number on it."
"How did you get it?"
"Grabbed it when you were on the phone. What time is it?"
"Almost 5. I really must go." Ralph pushed himself up, with barely a glance over his shoulder as he left the now empty room. Judging by how long it had taken in the car to get too school, it would take at least 25 minutes to get home. And it would take 15 to get to Farklands. That gave him just enough time to get changed, and get ready. For Jack.
