The Confession

"You know, it's kind of funny.."

Jasmine's eyes shot back from the sky to mine, full of curiosity as usual. She was definitely relaxed at the time, hands shoved into the front of her dress pockets, stood aloof with not a thought in her head. I knew she wasn't a heavy thinker like me, and sometimes I was a little jealous, I admit. Having something constantly on my mind could be tiresome, after all, it isn't like I had light thoughts.

I wondered sometimes, if perhaps that's one of the reasons I was pulled to her. I'm not sure if 'aura' is the right word to use, maybe demeanour? The kind of person she was, the way she acted..so full of life and optimism, a feeling I often found myself rolling my eyes at until I came across her.

Maybe all I needed was a change of perspective. Maybe--

"What is?" Her reply broke my train of thought. I blinked at her, coming to my senses having realised that my mind started to wander again.

"This..this..well," I cut off suddenly, not sure how to express myself.

The corner of Jasmine's lips turned upwards slightly into a cocky smirk. She turned her whole body and faced my front, hesitantly reaching for my hands. I let her hold them. I wanted to dig a hole and hide when I felt my cheeks burn as she pecked my hands, gazing at me through her lashes. Two more kisses later she spoke again without letting my hands go, instead choosing to hold them between us. "This' as in the idea of us?"

When I didn't respond she went on. "You never saw yourself opening up to me, huh? I'll tell you what though, I did."

"Jaz--"

"It may haven't been love at first sight for you," we both chucked, "but it certainly was for me, Huey. Fuck, you're just.."

It seemed she was at a loss of words this time. I tore my eyes away from her burning view and glanced at the overlook from the hill we stood on. I felt her still looking, but I couldn't guess how I'd act once I stared into her emerald eyes again. God, she was beautiful. It took every burning fibre in me not to pounce on her most times. Growing up, Jazmine always was an irritation more than anything, but I couldn't lie - she had rubbed off on me. All the pestering, and the checking, and watching her grow into the full woman she is now. I used to find her naivety ignorant, how she just viewed the world in a way I didnt, pushing aside the cruelty it bestowed on us black people. Somehow she did, and as childish as I may have found it, it was fresh.

She was fresh.

A breath of fresh air.

"You're just.."

Damn. Had I gotten lost in my thoughts again?

With a deep breath, I faced away from the view of Woodcrest and met her eyes. Surprised by my sudden turn, she let out a quick gasp and glanced down at our still entwined hands, suddenly shy. "Jazmine," I began, and she peeked at me through her lashes, "This should be the other way around."

I took a deep breath. I'm a revolutionary. I've got responsibilities. Jazmine wasn't a part of the plan. Falling in love wasn't a part of the plan. But I would've been an idiot to keep taking her for granted, she was a part I couldn't allow myself to be afraid of anymore. "Jazmine, I--"

"I love you Huey!"

Jazmine dropped my hands, shooting her palms to cover her mouth at her suddenly outburst. "I'm sorry, I..I couldn't take it anymore. I know you wanted to go first, but I.." I watched her, mesmerised as she inhaled her own deep breath for confidence. "I know you've got plans, and I may seem like a distraction, but..well, since we were kids, I've just always loved you. And I really think this could work, if we try you know? If we really, really--"

I couldn't take it anymore.

I made the first move, closing the space between us. This was it. I'd officially let all my walls down and let her in.

As Jazmine happily sunk into my arms and entwined her hands into my afro, I knew for sure, this was a move I never would've regretted.
