Marceline's perspective:
I silently ate my lunch as conversation started to stir up again. Anne gave me a couple of glances every once in a while, and she asked me quietly if I was okay. I nodded every time. They can't know. They'll hate me forever. I was sure that feeling would already burn in their hearts when they found out about how we got to Amphibia... That.. I was the one who tricked Sasha to get Anne into stealing the music box.
It's not my fault though... I just... I don't know what to do about this new feeling. My mom's started noticing my odd behavior too... I keep telling her not to worry, but that just makes her worry more. I hate it. I hate myself for this. I regret everything that happened 3 years ago. I hate having to hide it.
I've been seeing a very kind therapist for about two years. I couldn't imagine having to explain this to well... anyone.
I've been hearing odd voices in my head. It's not my own thoughts. I can't control them. It hurts. I don't like it. It's so strange. Why is it so bad? So horrible?
I hate it.
I hate it.
I hate it.
I hate it.
I hate it.
I hate-
" Marceline! " Sasha's voice overthrew my thoughts. I looked up quickly and noticed her. " Lunch is over Marcy. C'mon, we have to get to our next classes, "
" R-Right. Sorry, " I stuttered. I must have been so into my thoughts that I didn't hear the bell. I put my backpack on and I picked up my trash and I threw it away. Sasha waited for me at the cafeteria exit.
" Also, Marc. I noticed your eyes started to get... Watery. Are you feeling okay? " Sasha asked me as I approached.
" Huh? Oh, m-me? I'm fine Sash, " I told her as I put on a fake smile, " Yeah..yeah..absolutely nothing wrong with me...! Haha... "
Sasha looked at me concerned, " Whatever, if that's what you say. Anyway, my class is just around the corner. Cya Marc. " Sasha wished me farewell and waved goodbye as she turned the corner.
I sighed and tipped my head down as I continued walked down the hall. The sound of feet scuttling, and chatter flooded my brain. I later found myself colliding with another student.
" Hey, watch it! " A voice growled at me.
I looked up and I noticed Maddox, one of Sasha's friends.
" Oh, Maddox, I-I'm so sorry..I- "
" I don't wanna hear it. And look, Sasha's my friend. Don't think that your friendship with her will do anything with how I see you. Hell, I'm surprised she even was able to befriend a basically mute like you. It's kinda funny. " Maddox scoffed as she stood. I heard other snickers echo in the hallway. I tried to stand, but Maddox pushed me back down. " What's wrong? Get up, Marceline. " Maddox mocked me. More laughter echoed. Why is this happening? It was an accident. I again, tried to stand but I was pushed back down again. " C'mon Marcy. We're waiting. " she sneered.
The voices in my head had come back.
Let us help. Let us help. Let us help. The voices chanted.
" Help me... " I whispered the quietest I could.
" What was that? Calling for your friends? " Maddox snickered as she peered over me, " Or maybe your mommy and daddy? "
I felt a sudden surge in my body. I felt strong. Powerful... I went to stand again, and when Maddox tried to push me back, I had swiftly grabbed her hands. My grip must have been really strong, cause Maddox couldn't break free.
" H-Hey! Marceline, you know that I..uh..uh..I was just joking y'know! Yeah yeah..! " Maddox stammered. Next thing I knew, I couldn't see. I couldn't hear. What was I doing? What is going on?" Marceline Wu!! " I heard a masculine voice yell.
I could see again. I was back. What had happened? It was so..odd.
I then realized what I had done. My hands and the soles of my shoes were covered in blood. Maddox was bleeding badly, mainly in the face. Her left arm also looked to be lopsided.
What have I done...?
" Marceline Wu! Come with me! Now! " The voice yelled again. A tall, black-haired man had pulled me away and he took me to the front office.Turns out that man was the principal, Mr. Penn, and I had found myself sitting outside his office. The school had called my mother, and they were talking about the situation.
" This is a very serious offense Mrs. Wu, " I could hear the principal.
" My daughter was defending herself! She was being bullied! Why don't you care about that? " My mother argued.
" Mrs. Wu, this student could have been killed. We'll deal with the other student once they have made a smooth recovery. Please, just take Marceline home and do something about this. "" Look, Marceline, honey, I'm not completely furious about what you did, " My mom started to speak as we were driving home. I was sitting in the front seat and was looking out the window and watching other cars pass, " But all I really have to say is, you didn't need to handle it..like that... " My mom's voice trailed off.
" I'm sorry mom..I don't know what came over me..it all felt like it just happened in the blink of an eye... I- "
" Marceline please, " My mom stopped me mid-sentence, " Don't start apologizing. I know you were just defending yourself, "
The car went silent for a moment.
" L-Look, I know it's been a little tough, only being able to see your dad every once in a- "
" This shit isn't about dad! None of it ever was! " I snapped back quickly. My mom was caught completely off guard. My tone switched quickly to my normal soft tone, " O-Oh my..Uh..Mom I- Mom I'm sorry I didn't mean to... "
" Huff, Marceline. Just... Just forget it. " Mom sighed. She was visibly upset, but I was afraid of saying the wrong thing again, so I just stopped talking. I continued to observe the outside world that I'd seen so many times before. What was the point? What was there to look at? It's nothing new, like in Amphibia. Before I knew it, the whispers started to build up in my head again.
We saved you Marceline. They spoke.
You're welcome, Marceline.
We're helpful, Marceline.
Let us help you everywhere, Marceline.
We can be useful to you, Marceline.
Let us be useful for you Marceline.
You need us, Marceline.
We're all you need, Marceline.
We can help you, Marceline.
Let us out Marceline.
Set us free. Set us free. Set us free. They chanted.
Stop it! Stop it! I put my hand on my head and tried not to be too noticeable. I gritted my teeth, trying to ignore the painful voices. " Stop it... " I murmured.
The car had stopped. " Marceline, just come inside when you're ready, okay? " I heard my mother's voice. I didn't respond and just sat in the car.
Nobody can know. Nobody must ever know.
