Chapter 1: "Not like Miley Cyrus"
I watched the waves crash against the shore, over and over again. I took a deep breath and looked around the shop, empty as usual. It was nice around here, not a very common place for a home or vacation spot but, I liked it.
It was the summer after high school and I really had no plan. I didn't know what I was going to do after this summer. All of my friends had already registered for the college of their dreams and I had just registered for being a surfing instructor over the summer. I loved this town, but it was one of those places you had to move on from to start a life. And I needed money to do that, which my family didn't exactly have.
We owned a little market next to the beach that only my family worked at, it was near the beach but didn't get alot of business. My dad would work the early morning shifts before he went to work, I would work during the day, my younger brother would work when he got home from school and my dad would close when he got home from work. My mother had died from breast cancer two years ago, which made everything alot harder. I was only sixteen and my brother, Ryder was twelve when she died. Now my house was always quiet and everyone knew what they needed to do, it was simple.
I teach surfing lessons near the dock but, only had a few regular customers. It was fun and I met new people around the area. All of my friends from school lived at least 20 miles away from here. Except, my best friend Beth who is a year younger than me and is home schooled. We both teach surfing together. Although, she is more like the manager since I taught her how to surf when she was seven. Surfing was something I did to clear my mind- it really worked too.
I looked up from the counter and I saw a brown haired boy looking through the isles. He was so quiet I hadn't even noticed him here. He looked like he was looking for something in particular so I walked up to him.
"Hello, can I help you find something?" I asked him as I walked over to his isle.
"Yeah, I was looking for some band-aids." He said with a thick British accent, as he pointed to a huge cut on his leg. Blood drained from the bottom of his knee.
"Damn." I said before getting some gauze from the next isle. I grabbed the chair from behind the desk and told him to sit down. He did and I knelled down as he put his foot on my knee. I grabbed the gauze out of the box and pressed down on his cut.
"Thanks," He continued as he looked at my name tag. "Miley? Like Miley Cyrus?"
I looked up at him, "Not like Miley Cyrus. But, yes Miley."
He laughed and I continued, "How did this happen anyways?"
"I attempted to surf and the fins cut my leg."
I looked at him and laughed, wow.
"Don't laugh!" He said, with his cute accent.
"Sorry," I said, taking the gauze off as I grabbed the box of band aids and placed the largest band aid on his cut. I handed him the box of gauze and band aids.
"Change the band aid everyday so it doesn't get infected and if the cut reopens then put gauze on it then a band aid." I said as we both got up, I put the chair behind the desk.
"Thanks so much, how much was this?" He asked walked to the counter where I was.
"It's on the house." I said with a smile.
"You sure?"
"Yeah,"
"Thanks," He said as walked to the door, then suddenly turned. "I'm Liam, I'll see you around."
"Bye Liam." I said quietly.
