The church.

An important part of any good small east Texan town in the 90's.

Community events? Organized by the church.

After-school daycares? Held in the church.

Where was everyone Sunday morning? The pews of the church listening to the priest.

Even Xeno was part of the aforementioned crowd. His folks would drag him along to the service and stay silent as the priest perched his weekly reminder to be a good person sprinkled in with mentions of some all knowing man and his born-again son.

Things completely illogical to Xeno, but not useless.

He needed funding for his latest science project? Call it a fundraiser for the church and with his best friend, Stanley Snyder, they'd raise quite a bit going door to door. (or what a 7 year old would call a lot)

"You ever think this is wrong, Xe?" Stan randomly popped the question as the two walked to the next house.

"It's for science Stan," Xeno hummed the answer. The thought had crossed his mind before sure but for science he would tell himself.

"I mean used god's name like this and all," Stan popped the lollipop out his mouth.

"I don't believe in a god Stan," Xeno kind of chuckled at the notion.

"Shouldn't you be careful just in case?" Stan questioned.

"The church passes around the donation plate, right? This really isn't much different," Xeno looked into the jar. "But this goes to the advancement in science. Arguably something I'd call more pressing," Xeno looked back at his friend. He had a slight look of guilt clouding his face.

Not a look Xeno was expecting.

"But-," Xeno continued. "You don't have to join me if you don't want," Xeno offered.

Stan pooped the lollipop back in his mouth. "I'll stay but only to make sure no one picks on you,"

Xeno smiled a bit. There was truth behind Stan's words but Xeno liked to think Stan wanted to tag along to help a friend. "Very elegant choice,"

"Oh, and stop using such big words. It makes you a bigger target Xe,"

And Xeno continued on like that until the day he was able to move out of that small town and start his internship at NASA. (Something that got him a few looks when the rest of the town heard)

.

.

.

Sleepless nights and many cups of liquid death later Xeno got his doctorate and started to work in the aerospace engineering with a minor in astronomy and Astrophysics department of NASA.( or Layman's terms: Rocket science)

Later he was assigned to a team assigned to represent NASA at the DARPA tech expo.

"So they really want us to believe that they brought marines to this Tech expo for extra security?" Dr. Broddy, who was assigned to the same team as Xeno, asked Stan
