Mike Wheeler was a mess. It all began earlier in the day, when his gorgeous, super-powered girlfriend "dumped his ass" outside of Starcourt Mall in front of all their friends. Mike wasn't upset. No. Definitely not upset at all. This is why he had agreed to play DnD with Will and Lucas, whilst sporting a small heartache. It was very small though, so he was fine . He was actually starting to enjoy the game a little when Will began introducing his new characters.

"So, Elbeth is based in the South. She is from a cold region, where no one visits and her hair is usually shaved clean-"

Lucas cleared his throat, eyes hardening as they caught Will's in a knowing stare.

Will paused in his description of the mage, silently communicating with Lucas. Mike stared at the floor, fidgeting in his seat. It wasn't that Eleven was a sensitive subject, but it was...hard. It was very, very hard to think about her dumping his ass without feeling like his entire world had collapsed. Mike's hand came up to rest on the table, head swimming with doubt and guilt. Was he really that bad of a boyfriend to El? She had sounded so upset at Starcourt, meaning that he had messed up big time. Maybe he shouldn't have lied about Nana, maybe he should have tried harder at the mall, maybe Max was right and he was a controlling boyfriend -

Mike hadn't realised it, but his breathing had picked up. His hand was trembling on the table, bringing Lucas and Will's attention back to him. Both boys shared a brief look and then Will did something surprising. He swept Mike's DnD board off the table with one stroke and stood up. Lucas stood as well, and both boys came to crouch before Mike, turning him in his chair so that he was facing them. Mike could see the worry painting their faces but it was getting harder to breathe. He swallowed roughly, clapping a hand over his mouth to muffle the heavy sobs leaving him. His other arm wrapped itself around his middle, body shrinking as Lucas grabbed his shoulder in a tight grip, swearing, " shit, man, it's okay ."

Mike's heart thumped rabbit-quick in his chest and the room grew ten times hotter. Why was it starting to hurt?

"Mike? Hey, please look at me," Will said, voice choked with emotion. He held Mike's other arm, standing up so that he towered over Mike. Will tapped Mike's shoulder, then went back to rubbing small circles, ignoring the heat. "C'mon, Mike-"

"-I can't breathe ," Mike sobbed.

Will's heart hurt. He didn't know what to do to help his best friend. He wished Dustin was here, he would know what to do. The curly-haired boy was the smartest in their group.

Fortunately, Lucas seemed to understand and stood up beside Will. He took Mike's hand and placed it up against his own heart. "Here, man. Just try to match the beat. It's okay, just forget about everything else..."

Will nodded with newfound determination.

"Follow Lucas's heartbeat. You can do it, Mike."

Mike listened to his best friends and felt for Lucas's heartbeat. It was a little fast, he noticed, but so was his own.

Lucas came closer so that he was centimetres away from Mike, that way the distraught boy wouldn't have to reach too far. "Here, just like that..."

Mike nodded, voice caught in his throat. He hitched a few times, fumbling with his breathing, but Will softly squeezed his shoulder, keeping him rooted, and he was able to follow Lucas's heartbeat. As his breathing became less erratic, Mike found that his head was pounding and there was a salty taste on his tongue.

Mike pulled his hand away from Lucas, wiping the tears on his face with a grimace.

"I'm sorry," he said, cheeks heating up. "I didn't mean to ruin the game."

Will shook his head immediately.

"You're fine, man," Lucas verbalised. "It was getting late anyway, right Will?"

"Yeah, totally!" Will exclaimed, smiling through his tears. "We can always play again tomorrow. And maybe Dustin can join us too."

Mike's heart warmed at Will's enthusiasm. Maybe it wasn't the end of the world after all. Although, he did hate himself a little for making Will cry.

"I'm sorry for making you sad."

"Mike," Will frowned. "You're my best friend, of course I'll be sad seeing you upset. But it's not your fault, okay?"

When Mike refused to look up, Lucas kicked him under the table.

"Hey, you're good."

"Eleven doesn't think so," Mike shrugged.

"Well she's not here," Lucas grinned, "So you're definitely still the best."

Mike laughed as his friends began to crack up. Although, he missed her terribly all the while.
