Eleven was confused. Her ex-boyfriend was still taking over her thoughts, even though she was having fun with her new friend, Max Mayfield. Was that normal? She wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't - as nothing about her usually was . Well, except for Mike, but she had lost him.

Why had he lied to her? Why did he hate her?

She had secretly wished Max was wrong about Mike, and that he cared for her deeply. That he wouldn't lie to her. But no, he had lied straight to her face. In front of all their friends as well. It was humiliating.

El was shaken from her spiralling thoughts from Max, who was sitting across from her on El's bed. Her friend looked confused too, but for a different reason.

"What's wrong?" Max asked, quirking a brow. "Did you see something?"

"No," El said, "I was thinking."

"About what?"

"Mike."

Max sighed, rolling her eyes. "Oh god, that sucks. He's controlling even when he's not here."

El frowned.

"I wish he didn't lie to me."

"Well, Wheeler does whatever he wants. He's probably so upset right now," Max laughed. "I can imagine his face all..." she scrunched her nose, making El laugh. Mike really did look like that. Max continued, "He's probably just crying in his basement with Lucas and Will right now."

El nodded, smiling.

Suddenly Max lit up.

"Hey, I have an idea!" she said, "Do you want to spy on them?"

El blinked. "Spy?"

"Yes," Max grinned, "Basically, you can use your powers to see what they're doing right now."

"Okay," El said, getting off her bed. "I need a cloth for my eyes."

Max was practically shaking with excitement as El tied her eyes shut. She asked Max to turn on the Walki that Mike had given her, to which her friend eagerly complied.

"Do you see anything?"

"Not yet."

A few moments later, El felt her world turn darker and colder. She was in Mike's basement, yes. But something was off. Her ex-boyfriend did not seem to be crying like Max had described before. Instead, Mike was hunched over, sobbing into his hand with a worried Will and Lucas hovering over him. El felt her heart stop.

"Mike? Hey, please look at me," Will was saying, tears forming in his eyes. "C'mon, Mike."

"I can't breathe," her ex-boyfriend sobbed. He was shaking so much, and El wanted nothing more than to pull him into a tight hug. Her eyes began to prickle at the scene, all her previous anger dissipating.

Lucus suddenly took Mike's hand and pulled it against his own chest, so that Mike's fingers splayed out across his sternum. "Here, man. Just try to match the beat. It's okay, just forget about everything else..."

"Follow Lucas's heartbeat. You can do it, Mike."

"Here, just like that..."

Mike nodded, small gasps leaving his glistening mouth. Even in the void, he looked flushed and swollen.

El felt her own tears fall, as she moved closer to the scene. Why was he crying like his whole world had collapsed?

El decided she had seen enough. She had never wanted to hurt him like this, but she had. It was all her fault.

Mike slipped his hand away from Lucas, using it to wipe his cheeks with a grimace, just as El ripped off her black scarf. Her room came back into view, the black wetness fading into bright colours, as a worried Max sat before her, staring into her eyes.

"Hey, I was trying to get your attention but you just started crying. Are you okay?" Max asked, frowning.

El felt herself crumble.

"I hurt him," she cried.

Max pulled her into a hug, shocked. "What happened, El?"

"He was so upset , Max. He - he couldn't b-breath-" El sobbed, as Max rubbed her back, reminding her of the way Will had comforted Mike. Mike.

She had to see him. Now.

"Max, we need to go," El said, pulling back. "He needs me."

"El, we just got back. I don't think Hopper will let us leave again."

El shook her head.

"You don't understand. He needs to know...that I didn't mean it."

"I know, El," Max sighed. "But we can't go today. Give him some time, okay? Let him be with Lucas and Will- wait, he is with them, right?"

El nodded, her heart warming up at Max's worry for Mike. A year ago, she would have hated it, but now it made her feel grateful. She was truly happy that she had made a new friend, but it was time to get an old one back.

A plan formed in her mind, as Max hummed softly next to her.

"Tomorrow we will go see them."

"Sure," Max said easily. Then she got up and nudged El. "But let's find something to eat first, I'm starving and I'm sure using your powers made you hungry too."

"Okay," El gigged, her heart feeling calmer with the new plan in mind. Tomorrow she would get her boyfriend back, and give him that hug she had wanted to before.
