"Sila, get away from there. Father said we're not supposed to talk to the big guys."

The curious girl craned her neck around the corner of the fence to catch a glimpse of what appeared to be an armed guard. Out of the corner of his eye, the brawny man noticed the girl and narrowed his eyes in a warning fashion, as if to tell her he should listen to the boy calling out to her.

Her messy braid was yanked, which prompted her to let out a yelp before being pulled back inside the area of the property.

"Ow! Cut it out, Cal, I just wanted to see something," she whines, rubbing the back of her head where her scalp had been abruptly irritated.

"I've already tried to talk to them anyway. I always get yelled at by dad. He wants us to come inside anyway," the boy explained with his hands on his hips.

Silasanna exhaled, annoyed, "but I don't want to. I wanna play outside."

"We already played outside."

"You know what I meant," she grumbled under her breath.

Her nose crinkled in disgust as she peered up at the giant cavernous walls that enclosed the entire city in permanent darkness.

The boy studied her, as he knew all too well of her constant complaining of their unfortunate living situation. His eyes softened upon noticing the obvious longing in her eyes for something beyond this.

Cal had bore witness to life outside the Underground only a handful of times. Whether it be a birthday or a special occasion, his father would bring him to the surface to experience what the rest of nature had to offer. Even he understands the contrast of how it feels. He longs for those occasions, even trying to get on his father's good side, hoping he'll experience that cleaner, drier air from up above once again.

He grabbed the girl's hand and walked her back to the front door of the house, taking her mannerisms into account, as he knew not to go down the rabbit hole of asking her about it again.

Before Sila could turn the handle on the front door, Cal put a hand on her shoulder, prompting her to look at him.

Lips pursed and his gaze hard, looking straight into her own, he spoke, "I promise we'll see the sun one day. I'll make sure of it."

The girl laughed a childish giggle. "You're just a kid. What are you gonna do?"

Cal's expression morphed into something more purposefully serious, while still trying to stifle his own laughter.

"Hey, I'm a year older than you. Which is why I'm gonna be the one to take you. I'm more responsible," he crossed his arms and pointed his nose to the air.

Without any indication of his friend believing his words, he was engulfed in a bone-crushing hug. This surprised him, as he couldn't even comprehend the weight of what he had just promised her. Her petite frame didn't match the strength that ripped the air out of his lungs. He huffed but cracked a smile before returning her hug, nonetheless.

The two stood there, embraced in the dreary, musty air, completely forgetting they had been called in for dinner. Who were they to even know when dinner time was? No price was worth living in never-ending confinement, according to the children.

"Alright, you two, come inside. We've been waiting for almost an hour now," said the man who emerged from the doorway.

"Oh," the little girl blanched. "Sorry, Mr. Moriarty. I forgot about that."

The man could only chuckle at the sight in front of him. With two large hands placed on both of their heads, they were led inside for dinner, at who knows what time of the day.
