Chapter 5 A miracle

"So you're telling me because of spirit Nicola can't ever become strigoi again and we as damphir's could have a baby?" Will said in total shock. He held my hand as we all absorbed the news.
"How is that possible? Damphir's have never been able to have children together." Said Izzy. I could see her trying to hold back her happiness, when we were children all we ever wanted was to raise our children together, I had given up on that dream when I fell in love with Will. Now that dream was a reality.

"When Nicola changed back the spirit that you used to heal her changed her, we aren't sure how but we know from evidence that these things are possible. We think spirit 'healed' the part of her that enables her to have a baby with a damphir and we think spirit stays in the body to prevent the change into a strigoi ever again." Said Lissa almost breathless, I could tell from the look on her face that she was excited to see another spirit user.

"So how were these theories proved?" I asked trying to piece this all together in my head. Was I really protected from becoming a monster again? Could Will and I actually have a family?
"The strigoi theory was proved last year when a Moroi tried to become strigoi again, he used both methods to try transform but that left him dead" said Rose "A baby was also conceived by two damphir's, the baby was born a few months ago, but nobody outside of this room knows and we ask you to keep it that way for now." Finished Rose looking caring but serious.

"May I ask why? If Will and Nicola do have a child one day why can't they tell people the child is Will's and not another moroi's?" Asked Able looking over at Will and myself. Able loved Will not just as a friend but as a brother they had both become so close since they both graduated, and he loved me too and knew how much we would love a family of our own, to raise our children with his and Izzy's.

"The mothers dying wish was for her child's conception to remain a secret so her child wouldn't be a lab rat" said Lissa softly
"Was the birth the reason for the mothers death? Was it because the child was conceived by damphir's?" Asked Will loudly "We can't have a family if the process will kill you!" Yelled Will to me.
"Will it wasn't that that killed her, it was a strigoi attack" said Christian jumping up to calm will down along with Dimitri.

Will relaxed a little before sitting down next to me. I felt almost dizzy with all this new life changing information. "So what else am I here for?" I asked looking up at them all. "What do you mean?" Asked Lissa in surprise.
"Well you wouldn't of brought us all here just to tell me this." I asked thinking about everything, things that could have been said over the phone or through a letter. All four of them looked at each other obviously they knew something the rest of us didn't. "Dimika?" I asked with force this time this might be shocking but I was still stubborn and hated being left out of the loop. Dimitri looked at Rose when she nodded he answered. "We would like to ask you, if we could do a few tests as you are the only female damphir we know of who has changed and we want to know what's changed in you. We want to know what changed in you and if we can replicate it for other damphir's." Dimitri spoke softly knowing how big of a question this was for me.

I took my time to reply I could feel my heart getting faster and faster. I felt Will's hand grip tighter on mine giving me his love and strength. I could see Izzy's and Ables loving eyes on me, I knew what was being asked if me was huge. More than huge life changing, if they could replicate whatever changed in me this could mean a change in the damphir community. More damphir men could have children Moroi wouldn't have to be the only way we could reproduce. But I was half Moroi, could a child from two damphir's be a step in the right direction for all of us? Or would it be the destruction? Would this cause a bigger drop in guardian numbers so that damphir fathers could raise their children too?

I didn't know. Would my potential child be taken from me? An experiment their whole life? A freak?

I wanted to help. I wanted a child with Will so much, I wanted a family of my own a family I could protect as well as my other family. Or would Will and I become a poster couple for damphir parents? Would we be placing a target on our backs forever by strigoi and Moroi alike? Would we be placing that same target on a child? Our child?

I took a deep breath before answering. "I need some time to think about this, and talk to Will about it privately, this is his journey just as much as it is mine." They all nodded in agreement. I wondered if Dimitri and Rose would be getting the same testing or was children something that they didn't want. "If we do agree I would ask only a few things, I want this to be kept a secret from everyone apart from those involved. I don't want the council knowing or any other Moroi or damphir. If it gets out and gets ugly it will be our heads on the chopping block." I said tightening my grip on Will's hand. They all nodded in agreement. "I will have a lawyer draw up a confidential contract for all health staff involved" said Lissa writing it down. "If you don't mind your highness, I am a lawyer and would like to draw it up with your permission?" Asked Able I knew he would want to know the ins and outs of this so we were all protected. "Of course" said Lissa smiling back I could see the happiness almost radiating off her. It must be nice for her to find others like her. "Now then you must all be tired, I'll have Dimitri and Rose show you your rooms, I would like it if you all stayed in the royal home as you are all family." Lissa said getting up.
