Nico had a secret, he was in love with Leo Valdez. He used to have a major crush on Percy Jackson, but all that changed during the war against Gaea.
He really liked Percy, from his short black hair to his goofy-looking smile. The boy loved everything about him, completely smitten for years. But once he saw Percy's sea-green eyes meet Annabeth's stormy gaze as they reunited in Rome, he knew he was doomed from the start.
As the years went by, their relationship started to take a toll on him. After bottling up all the pain for so long, Nico decided that it was better this way. Better to let go and let Percy be happy. It only hurt when he realized his crush had found that happiness with someone else.
Then to make matters worse, there were rumors. Rumors going around Camp Half-Blood saying that Nico was dating Will Solace. They were good friends, and they intended to stay that way. The two boys hung out from time to time, but never in a romantic sense.
Will worked as a nurse in the camp infirmary, so he would tell Nico about the patients. Talking rapidly about how fast they were improving, or needed some guidance from others. He seemed really passionate about his research and involvement with medicine, but that's not the only thing Will was interested in. The sun-kissed boy didn't like to be the only one talking, so he would ask Nico questions. Personal questions.
"So, do you have something you're interested in?" Will asked curiously.
"Does Myth-O-Magic count?" Nico replied with ease.
"What? No! And you still owe me money from last game!" Will complained in annoyance.
"Come on Will, don't play that card. Besides, it is something that interests me." Nico teased playfully.
"Then let me restate the question. Do you have someone you're interested in?" Will asked, waiting for an answer.
"H-Huh, not this again. You already know the answer to that." Nico stuttered as heat rushed to his cheeks.
"Well, not the right one because you still won't tell me! Can't you just trust me a little?" Will demanded irritably.
"Yeah I trust you, just not with this. And you know everything there is to know about my love life! It's practically nonexistent." Nico ranted with crossed arms.
"Well, I can help with that, if you just let me! I told you all about Travis, so you should tell me all about Le--"
"Hey there death king!" Leo greeted.
Well speak of the devil, there he was. Leo Valdez, the best demigod from Cabin 9 since the late Beckendorf. Leo was a bit on the short side, with dark brown eyes and curly hair, and the best crooked smile. However, his looks didn't cover all of his good traits.
He may be capable of controlling fire, building and steering the Argo II, and can fix almost anything with his magic toolbelt. But those qualities are nothing compared to his incredible personality.
"That's not my name Valdez and you know it." Nico grunted in annoyance.
"Aw, you're no fun death breath. Hey Solace! What are y'all up to?" Leo asked innocently.
"Just talking for a bit. But you know, I have to get back to the infirmary. See you later guys!" Will said, waving as he walked away.
"Catch you later Solace!" Leo replied, waving back.
"Why did he leave me like that? Oh, he's so gonna pay for this!" Nico thought enraged.
"So Nico, you lonely here without Will?" Leo teased with a devious smile.
"No, not at all. I'm usually alone anyways, so why would I?" Nico questioned in confusion.
"Ok good because I thought I might be interrupting something. You two seemed pretty close for a while, so I didn't want to pry." Leo explained, with his hands in his pockets.
"We may be close, but not in the way you think. Will is just a friend, nothing more." Nico confirmed bluntly.
"Oh my bad. It was a stupid rumor anyway..." Leo apologized sincerely.
"Very stupid. I get over Percy, and then suddenly I like Will now? I'm not in love with every person I meet!" Nico scowled harshly.
"Of course you're not, that's Calypso's job. But if it's not Will, then who do you really like?" Leo asked in wonder.
Nico was about to laugh at the joke, but then caught onto what Leo was saying.
"N-No one in particular. I'm not a big fan of people anyway, so I'm just fine on my own." Nico stuttered, staring down at his shoes.
"Well that is true, but I'm sure you need someone in your life! I know I need you in mine..." Leo whispered with a blush.
Nico stared at the boy and gasped. Jaw hanging open for all to see.
"You...need me?" Nico repeated in shock.
"Of course I need you Nico! You always think everybody sees you in some sort of negative light, but that's far from the truth! I've always seen you as something more. The one who'd stay up all night on watch on the Argo II, the one who'd help Will out in the infirmary, and the one who always tries his best for his friends. Even when people aren't there to see you giving it your all, you still help out and put in the work. And that's the person that I want by my side." Leo confessed with flames in his hair.
"Leo, I had no idea you felt this way. That you've been watching me all this time. Well, I think it's time that you stopped. Stop watching me from afar and stay at my side. I've never felt so strongly about someone before, I only get this feeling when I'm with you! My heart knows this very well, but I think it's finally time that to say it out loud." Nico admitted wholeheartedly, taking a deep breath.
"I love you Leo Valdez. Will you go out with me?" Nico confessed, blushing bright red.
"I love you too Nico di Angelo. I'll happily be your man!" Leo promised, taking Nico's hand.
As he took his hand, Nico felt a wave of boldness wash over him. He let go of his new lover's hand, then wrapped his arms about his neck. Nico pulled Leo in closer, leaning in as the space between them grew smaller and smaller. Until there was no space left at all.
As their lips brushed against each other, Leo smiled into the kiss. Filling Nico with feeling, the feeling of happiness that he once longed for.
