The Lawrence home had been chosen to host this year's grand Death Eater ball. As the daughter of the house, I found myself once again expected to play the role of the perfect daughter to amuse my parents. Although the odds were not in my favor, I couldn't help excitement bubbling within me as the evening approached, for I knew that Evan would be in attending.
Amid the preparations, my maids busily adorned me in an exquisite gown, their hands deftly pulling and adjusting the tight corset around my waist. A slight cough escaped me as one of the maids tugged a bit too tightly. My mother's sharp voice pierced through the room, "I told you not to eat breakfast, didn't I?"
"Apologies, Mother," I replied, trying to maintain composure. "I did skip breakfast, and last night's dinner as well."
In this family, following orders had become second nature. Some might label me a robot or a servant to my parents, but I cared little for such opinions.
As the room cleared out, leaving me alone, I stood before a tall mirror in my chamber, admiring my reflection. With delicate hands, I smoothed the fabric of my dress around my waist. Stepping towards the dresser, I picked up a pair of red gloves. Swiftly, I slipped the right one on, but as I reached for the left, a sudden burning sensation seared through my arm. Clenching my jaw, I looked down to see my dark mark.
Quickly, I pulled up the glove, and reapplied my dark crimson lipstick, masking any trace of unease. Giving myself one final scrutinizing look in the mirror, I heard a knock on the door.
"One moment," I called out, hastily slipping on my heels and straightening my posture.
As I opened the door, my eyes met the sight of a tall figure with curly hair and mesmerizing green eyes. It took a moment for me to register the identity of the person before me—it was the one and only Regulus Black.
Although I knew very little about Regulus, our families shared a close bond. We had barely spoken to each other. I was curious to learn more about the young black. I had always heard tales of his older brother, Sirius, the blood traitor. Yet, it was Regulus who now stood before me.
"Evening...Can I help you?" I asked, maintaining a composed demeanor.
"Evening. I've been asked to escort you to the ballroom," Regulus replied, his voice carrying formality.
"I see," I responded, stepping out of my room and closing the door behind me.
Regulus extended his arm, offering it for me to take. I hesitated for a moment, observing him before finally linking my arm with his. Together, we began walking in silence toward the grand doors that would lead us to the ballroom.
Just as we neared the doors, our house elf, Libby, appeared before us, her small frame standing in our path.
"Mr. Black and Mrs. Lawrence, Lord Voldemort require your presence," she announced in her meek voice.
I bent down to her level, taking her tiny hands into mine. "Thank you, Libby," I said, smiling warmly. "My pleasure, Madam," she replied. House elves were often treated with disrespect, but Libby had been with me since my childhood, caring for me more than my mother. With a final nod of gratitude, I released her hands, and she scurried away, disappearing into the shadows.
"I had not expected that from you," Regulus remarked, breaking the silence as we resumed our walk.
"I may be a Lawrence, but I haven't lost my sense of etiquette, Black. Disrespect does not bring respect to anyone," I retorted the fire in my voice matching the determination in my eyes.
Finally, we arrived at the designated meeting place. I knocked on the door, but no one answered. Regulus raised an eyebrow, his expression questioning, while a swarm of nervous butterflies erupted within my stomach. Ignoring the unease, I gave Regulus a reassuring look before pushing open the already slightly open door.
Together, we entered the dimly lit room, and to my surprise, I caught sight of my all-time favorite blondie—Evan. His eyes widened as he rushed toward me, completely disregarding Regulus's presence, and enveloped me in a warm, hug. Normally, I wouldn't tolerate such a gesture from anyone else, but with Evan, it was different. The embrace brought back memories of childhood and the sweet scent of chocolate frogs that still lingered in my mind.
"Merlin! Rosie, it's been way too long!" Evan exclaimed, his voice filled with genuine delight. I savored his embrace and whispered, "I saw you just last week, Evan."
Reluctantly, Evan released me from his hold, finally taking notice of Regulus's presence. Regulus extended his hand for a handshake, but Evan responded with a blank stare. "Come on, man, what the hell is that?" Evan exclaimed, pulling Regulus into a bear hug
Regulus seemed taken back at first then warmed into the hug. Now I had not expected this.
As we settled into the room, our attention was drawn to the opening of the doors. Lord Voldemort himself made his entrance and sends an oxygen-sucking atmosphere around him. Each of us straightened our postures, and Evan instinctively positioned himself protectively in front of me.
"Good evening, children," Lord Voldemort's voice filled the room with a chilling tone, sending shivers down my spine. "I apologize for keeping you from the ball."
"Evening," I responded curtly, the two men behind me echoing my words.
"Children, I am proud to inform you that you are the highest-ranking Death Eaters in your training," Lord Voldemort continued, his voice oozing with fake emotion. "Therefore, I have handpicked you for a mission."
"What kind of mission?" Regulus interjected, his voice filled with authority and dominance
"Patience, Regulus," Lord Voldemort hissed, taking a step closer to us. "That's the best part. All three of you will embark on a mission to retrieve a single Horcrux for me. I don't know how you will do it, nor do I have enough gratitude to care. And if you fail... well, I will show you why people fear me." He states as he walks towards the door to exit, "You will make your departure tomorrow morning" He says, leaving a final remark.
With just that, Lord Voldemort departed, leaving the three of us stunned, our minds racing with thoughts of the daunting mission that lay ahead
