Adira let out a tired huff as she finished making the meal that she had spent the last hour and a half preparing for her and her brother. She had been able to have a quick shower, throwing on a pair of shorts and a Metallica band tee before beginning to cook.

A small yawn escaped her lips before she turned off the oven and the stove. She smelt the food, smiling proudly before delicately placing the food on the two plates, taking her time to make sure it looked nice.

She stepped back and did a small bow, "I know, I know, im amazing. Thank you all very much," she said as she continued to bow to her imaginary audience

She looked up at the clock hanging above the fridge and saw that it was 5;58 "oh shit," she groaned out before quickly running to set the table, pouring herself and her brother a glass of coke before placing the food on the table just in time for the door to be thrown open.

Adira quickly wiped away the sweat, and the few tears of frustration that she had shed while cooking for her and her brother, trying to make the food just how Steve had liked it. She plastered a smile on her face as Steve rounded the corner

"Hey Addy," Steve said with a wide grin, dumping his bag on the floor and then kicking his shoes off. He walked over to the girl, pulling her in for a quick side hug before looking down at the food, a small frown covering his face. The table had been set out nicely, there were even fresh flowers in the middle of the table that coordinated with the expensive place mats

"Oh shit," he mumbled out, a guilty look beginning to cross his face as he looked down at his sister, "I'm so sorry Adira, I completely forgot."

Every year, on the first day of school, Adira would make their grandmothers special dish. Sure, the girl generally cooked for her and her brother, but this tradition had meant everything to Adira because before her grandmother had died, she would come over and surprise them with the meal.

And ever since her death, Adira had gone out of her way to make it perfectly and her and Steve would eat it together before eating a bunch of ice cream

"I told Nancy that I would go with her to Barbs parents house for dinner," Steve muttered out, his eyes dancing over all the amazing food on the table in front of him

Adiras smile dropped instantly, "oh," she choked out softly before quickly shaking her head, forcing a fake smile on her pretty face, "that's okay... I'll just put it in the fridge, you can reheat it later, it's no biggy," the girl said, her heart aching as she struggled to hold back her tears

She cursed herself internally for being so stupid and emotional, but this really meant a lot to her and she had put so much effort into it. Not to mention, this was Steve's last year and therefore, the last time the tradition would be the same.

Their grandmother had been the only one in their family who has actually cared for them, so it meant a lot for them to uphold the tradition in her memory

Steve grinned and kissed the top of her hair quickly before going to run over to the stairs, "thanks Addy, you're the best," he said before running up to his room to get changed, wanting to look nice because he knew this had meant a lot to Nancy

Adira let out a shaky sigh before sitting down at the table, her eyes lingering on the food for a few moments before slamming her hand down on the table and standing up. She grabbed her plate and tossed her food into the bin and then put her brothers into the fridge.

She grabbed her jacket off the back of the couch and then grabbed her skateboard, and left the house, wiping away the single tear that had fallen down her cheek

"Stupid, stupid," she cursed at herself as she skated down the road. She wasn't entirely sure where she was going to go, but she just needed to get out and get some fresh air.
