On California's beaches, mallard ducks have learned to surf for food.

As the swash (the part of a broken wave that washes up a beach) approaches the mallards from behind, the duck is lifted up, transported by the wave, and then dropped off further down the beach. The bird then plunges its bill in the loose sand, waggles it around, and catches a Pacific sand crab. Once they've eaten the tasty reward, they do it all over again. But aren't mallards freshwater birds? What are they doing surfing? Scientists can only guess that they saw shorebirds wading in the swash and thought they could give that a go.

What next?

Will a duck see someone rollerblading and swap the surfboard for wheels?
