In my research I saw that she had been the Deputy Mayor's secretary for about two years, and after a few calls to family members I discovered that she was his lover too.

Her mother said she had an older boyfriend who was never introduced to the family, and I was able to call a friend who confirmed it was Deputy Mayor Charles. I took advantage of George's absence and decided to do a little research on him, I discovered a few things, but he was 28 years old, his last name was Winter, he had graduated in law 7 years ago and had worked at that police station ever since. The records didn't have data on relationships, but I already knew he was trustworthy as a human being and not a psychopath.

Points for him.

George entered the room and the tension was established, I was very nervous in his presence, my heart and my breathing accelerated and I felt like I was going to pass out at any moment.

"I found out she was the mayor's lover."

I thought I'd talk about the case before the atmosphere got heavier.

"Really? That takes us a few steps forward. He comes in as the main suspect, how did you find out? I already ordered the toxicology test, it should be ready tomorrow. I'll call the office to ask for an interrogation there tomorrow too."

"I researched her life on the internet and social media, and made some calls to family and friends."

"Great, we already have a case well underway. I don't know if you know, but it's not common to gather all this information on the first day."

He paused his thoughts, smiled and stared at me for a few seconds.

"You surprise me."

All my efforts to ease the tension were in vain, I was trapped in that smile and that moment. All the professional training I had was gone, he was messing with me too much and I needed to take back control, but I could only smile back and say thank you.

We spent the rest of the afternoon researching and gathering more information about her, and George arranged a time with the vice mayor for us to interrogate him, because being a public figure wasn't just visiting him and expecting to be welcomed.

When we realized it was time to go home, in my case, the hotel, as I had not yet rented or bought a place to stay there. We went to the lockers to get our things to go out, and to my surprise and coincidence George's locker was right next to mine. Maybe they put me there because they knew we'd be partners.

George smiled when he saw that my locker was next to his, his locker door was between the two of us, and suddenly he closed it slowly, coming face to face with me.

"Listen, I need to tell you. What happened today, it's not common, I'm not like that. You can ask anyone, I'm usually super reserved and professional, but I don't know what happens to me in your presence. from the first second I saw you this morning, and I liked you even more as I got to know you better throughout the day, but I wanted to start this off right, get to know you outside of here. Outside the police station. I wanted to take you out to dinner, What do you think?"

He was staring at me waiting for an answer, but I was silent, I didn't say a word, and he continued.

"But of course, that's if you want to, if you're not interested, I forget everything and keep it just professional."

I didn't say anything, I just took a step forward, closing the distance between the two of us even more, stood on tiptoe, he was much taller than me, and placed a hand on his shoulder to take my lips close to his ear.

"I would love."

My voice came out as a whisper, and I saw him react to that with his body tensing.

I lost my balance from standing on tiptoe, but before I could think about falling, George wrapped a hand around my waist and pulled my body closer to his, and I shuddered.
