WW2 - Sacrifices That Had to be Made

Omaha Beach

The Motor of the engine trembles the Higgins Boat, A soldier fastens their netted helmet and stiffens with their M1 Garand.

"All right soldiers, get ready to run up that beach to the sea wall and wipe those Krauts out!" A man yells on the top of the boat.

As the Higgins Boat gets closer to the beach an explosion rumbles meters away from the boat. The soldier looks over the boat.

"There are mines in the water!" He yells. The boat swerves to avoid any mines in its path. They follow back on the path to the beach. "Soldiers get ready to run or get blown up, whatever happens keep on running!" The Sergeant Major yells.

"We're a few feet from the beach, get ready!" The sounds of waves sloshing and the firing of MG-42 and 34's going off. The door falls and the troops run out.

The first two to run out get shot instantly and they collapse floating in the water. Everyone runs to the divots on the sand. "We're caught under machine gun fire, wait until they stop!" The sergeant Major yells, still three soldiers run to the large stones in the landscape. A soldier gets shot down instantly. Another gets shot in the head by a Kar 98k rifle and the last one makes it.

He fires at the pillboxes with his Thompson gun. Giving the soldiers time to run. "Philip over here!" A soldier yells. Philip runs to him holding his M1 Garand in hand, weighed down by the water and the sand in his clothes.

Constant fire goes off everywhere. "We have room to run go!" The Sergeant Major yells, they run but the Sergeant Major gets shot in the jaw and collapses instantly. "Get down!" Someone yells tackling Philip. A mine goes off killing the others. "You okay?" The soldier says both their ears ringing. "Yeah," Philip says. "Name?" He asks. "John," the soldier replies.

"We seem to be jammed under machine fire," John says. "Look! DD-Sherman's and Sherman Bulldozers!" Philip yells happily. "That gives us room to run!" John yells running, they both run a lengthy distance and end up getting trapped under fire again. A soldier runs up the beach and gets gunned down instantly. "Oh hey your the 29th Infantry Division," John says looking at Philips shoulder. "And you're 1st Infantry," Philip responds, "that's interesting," a grenade plops 12 feet from them, "crap!" John yells moving away. Philip goes into fetal position while holding his helmet.

The grenade goes off and doesn't harm any of them, "we got to run before another one gets closer," Philip yells. A spigot-type gets shot at a pillbox and destroys some of the concrete. "Run!" Philip yells. They both run getting closer to the Pillboxes.

A bullets whizzes past Philip and into Johns cheek killing him on the spot, "damnit!" Philip yells jumping into the ground. He curls himself and hyperventilates looking at Johns body. "I'm stuck," he says holding his rifle in hand. A DD-Sherman drives by Philip and he follows it.

The tank shoots a bunker killing the people inside. A panzerfaust gets shot at the tank killing its crew and leaving it motionless. Philip finds cover near by.

"I just have to get over this damn cliff," he says looking around, two soldiers run towards the cover Philip is behind. "Hey, there's lower land over there," one of them says, they look for an opening and run. The constant ringing of the MG continues.

The other soldier shoots the machine gunner in his stahlhelm making a ping noise close to an M1 Garands. The three of them climb the short cliff. The second soldier gets shot and falls, the first soldier pulls an M1911 and shoots the German. They both get up safely.

"Damn it Keith get it together," the soldier says. "Hey, we'll be fine," Philip says, "I'm Philip by the way," "Keith," he says. They both get up and sneak towards a pillbox, a German jumps at Keith and shoots him with a Luger p08. Philip shoots the German in the head at point blank.

Philip walks into the pillbox, he shoots the machine gunner, "scheiße!" The other German yells shooting Philip in the left pectoral, making him fall down the steps. He pulls a colt m1917 revolver. The German runs into view they both shoot, the German hits Philip in the shoulder and Philip misses. Keith runs in and shoots his Thompson submachine gun at the German.

"Philip get up!" He yells trying to pull him up. Philip groans in pain, "come on!" He yells trying to drag him. "I can't Keith I'm as good as dead, I'm pretty sure that second bullet is still in there," he says unable to move. A bunch of Germans from a sandbag wall near by rush towards Keith. He guns them down but a Stielhandgranate falls near him.

"Grenade!" Keith yells the grenade goes off sending shrapnel into Keith's shoulder. The Germans advance, Philip shoots at them and Keith continues to shoot. Philip sees a German aim at him and then instantly everything goes blank, as his consciousness gets shot out instantly.
