"So...this is the surface. Just by arriving here alone, I feel at ease. I don't feel as if I have to keep looking over my shoulder or get ready to fight someone. Everything's clean, the buildings are well maintained, there's no drug addicts sleeping in every alley. It's as if I feel somewhat out of place, but I need to conquer that feeling. I've done and worked too hard to turn back. There's nothing left for me there anymore...".
I make my way to my apartment that's down the street from my new gym. Before Mike passed away, he brought me to his office and told me, " B Lou, I've made some very bad choices in my life. I know those choices has earned me a quick exit from this realm. So before that time comes, I want you to know where I keep all of my money in case of emergencies. It's the least I can do to make sure you go far in life". I looked at him and said, " If you know your life is in danger, then why not run away and go to the surface where you'll be safe". He put his hand on my shoulder and replies, " I wish it was that easy Lou, the unfortunate fact is, I can't leave the alleyways alone. The alleys is all I know, I've gotten too comfortable down here and I know that will be my unfortunate doing ".
As I finish reminisce on the past, I make my way inside of my apartment. It's a nice one bedroom and it came fully furnished so I don't have to worry about buying things. I go in my room and set my things down, I don't have many things with me since I only brought my necessities. My bag only consisted of my toothbrush and toothpaste, a towel with some body wash, a few pair of regular clothes, some boxers and socks, and finally my training gear.
Mike left me enough money so I don't have to worry about any bills for about five years, but that's more than enough time for me to accomplish my goals which is to become the greatest heavyweight boxer that I can be. I take a shower and head to the nearby store to put some food in my fridge. My list contains eggs, rice, chicken, vegetables, fruit, water and juice. I keep myself on a strict diet that covers all my needed nutrition to keep my weight in control. As I'm bringing my cart to checkout, I start putting my items on the counter to get checked. As I'm getting ready to pay, I look at the cashier that's helping me out and I stand there in complete silence. The cashier is a woman and she looks just like my former love Marissa. I stand there in shock for a moment as I can't even speak or move, she looks back at me with concern and ask me, " Sir, is everything ok?". I finally get the strength to say something back as I reply, " Marissa? Marissa is that really you?". As I said that tears began flowing down my face. She then hands me some wipes and say, " I apologize sir but I believe you have me confused with someone else. My name is Susan but I hope you find this Marissa lady you're looking for".
