Ch- 9 A Mother's Incitement

The Madhyamik board results were finally out. Those who passed were rejuvenating as they shed the tears of joy including Susmita while those who failed were shedding the tears of despair as their entire being succumbed with the fear of a miserable future and a career if there was any. But in all honesty no one could be blamed for this, a total of 1,066,000 students had taken the exam and the seats were only 900,000 so naturally the remaining 166,000 students who did not do so well were terminated. Their only resort left was to retake the exam after studying for 2 years again.

Regardless of how the poor souls were tormenting all the spotlight was only focused on the 3 people who ranked in the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place in the board exam. Priyangshu Shaw had taken the 1st place, the boy belongs to a normal middle class family but was a natural hard worker. The 2nd place was occupied by none other than our Riah, Riah Chaterjee the only daughter of the millionaire Raunit Chaterjee who owns the leading architectural companies in the state. And lastly, the 3rd place shockingly enough was given to Ananya Kaur.

Ananya was recognised for only ever ranking in the 1st or 2nd place in everything she took part in so everyone has been expecting the same this time around including herself so this unexpected result drew everyone's attention onto Ananya even more and created quite the chatter among people in the state and country, the news even flew to the US and other countries thanks to being the daughter of one of the most well known distinguished families. But even without her family's influence the lady was quite popular herself as she fairly participated in a number of international programmes and contests so the news was bound to get some attention from even outside India.

The press had lined up outside her family mansion only to get some answers out of her regarding her result. Ananya as appaled and disappointed as she was was in no mood to have an interview with anyone, she knew all too well what sort of questions have they arranged for her.

"How does it feel to rank in the 3rd place?"

"As far as we have noted, this is your first time coming in the 3rd place or has this happened before ?"

"What caused this ? Have you been distracted from your studies ?"

Cause ? Distraction ? Yes indeed, this had only happened because she was too busy getting herself distracted in her thoughts of Susmita. That year they never met and had only exchanged words through phone which only made it harder for the older girl to focus more efficiently on her studies. Their 1 year of no meet had done quite the toll on her which resulted to this.

But more than anything an intense bitter feeling built inside Ananya, that is Riah beat her to the second place. True, Priyangshu Shaw also beat her to it, but it felt way worse to lose to her friend than losing to a stranger. Never in her life did Ananya fathom that she will be losing to her best friend but tried her best not to resent Riah for it and swore to herself that this will be the last time she loses to anyone else.

As unpredictable as it was a certain someone was ecstatic about this whole ordeal which is none other than Riah's father Raunit Chaterjee. The man has always been pressuring Riah with every possible means -be it verbal or physical abuse to excel in her academics, sports, business world and every other thing just like Ananya.

But Riah is just another human, unlike Ananya she hasn't possessed any multi talent, so even though she has tried her best she could barely ever get herself a seat in the 1st or 2nd position, she got the 2nd place only because Ananya didn't do her best this time and every time she failed she had to face the horrifying temper of this cruel man who delivered violent and brutal punishments upon his own daughter out of the public eye. So when Riah topped Ananya and ranked 2nd the man was simply on cloud nine but not for long. Upon his dismay Ananya still got the most attention despite her shortcoming. Surely Riah and Priyangshu were interviewed as well for ranking in the 1st and 2nd place among the millions in the board exam but it was a first for Ananya to show such fallibility so the attention was again drawn towards her. Mr. Chaterjee not accepting this turn of events tried his best to divert the media's attention towards his daughter but it was no use.
