Graduation Day
I sat in the huge auditorium, awaiting for my principal to call my name.
I decently clapped for my fellow classmates but I was hella tired and I just wanted to leave.
Last night, Syre caught a huge fever and had me up all times of the night trying to get him to cool down. I was happy when my mother came by to help me get ready and keep him in the stands.
My father came along with my mother to the graduation. I was surprised my father came because at the moment we were really just being cordial to each other for my mothers sake.
"Ma'Kai Hastings"
I walked across stage with a pep in my step. I finally achieved something big towards my future.
Dr. Chamberlin sent me a wink as she shook my hand, and I curtsied at the end of the stage to all my haters a.k.a my classmates.
I felt so relieved and stress free but all that changed when they called a name I wasn't expecting.
"Omere Jackson"
I was surprised to see Omere stand up and walk across the stage.
All the boys in our class started hollering and while everyone laughed it off I got frustrated he had the widest smile on his face like he had no other care in the world.
Omere hasn't called since he left the house to go to work last week, I tried calling but nothing. All I wanted to do was go home wrap myself up with my baby boy and watch a nice movie.
"Congrats Ma'Kai, I'm really proud of you"
My parents walked up to me with a beautiful bouquet in their hands.
"Thanks Dad"
I gave my dad a big hug and he nearly squeezed me tightly something we haven't done in years. We pulled apart and I felt the tears threatening to spill over.
"Mama don't cry"
I picked up Syre, and gave him a kiss and whispered 'I Love You' in his ear and he repeated it back to me. It was a moment to remember.
"Come on let's go home, I remember hearing Ms. Wilson say she was making her famous Chicken Pot Pie and my stomach is grumbling." My parents took Syre and headed outside.
I started following my parents out towards the car but I felt a pair of eyes on me, I turned around and my eyes connected with Omere's.
We stared at each other for what felt like light years and then I left.
It felt like I was walking away from the worst decision in my life, but honestly the only man I'll fight for is my son.
"Momma, Daddy, did you guys invite people over to your house?"
"We wanted to surprise you, but I guess all the cars in the driveway gave it away huh?"
I was a little disappointed as we pulled up to the front yard and parked in my parents driveway it was filled with cars and I wondered if they invited family or congress? But I tried telling myself or more like persuading that I was going to at least enjoy it.
"Okay everyone, we have a special toast for our beautiful daughter. Ma'Kai, you have been the most loving daughter a father could ask for. Yes we have had our mishaps and our disagreements but at the end of tonight, we can hopefully be a big happy family once again? You have graced our presence with an amazing grandson and for the first time in three years I can actually say I'm happy to be called grandpa. Congrats sweetheart, live life to the fullest and don't let anyone get in your way of success. Love You Lots Sugar"
