COMFORT FOOD

"Surely it's not going to be that bad."

"Leave her alone, Lorenzo."

"What? I know that starting a new school is scary, but, what have we got here? We've got a batch of butterfly cupcakes, chocolate chip muffins, and is that gingerbread I smell?"

"Actually, those are blueberry muffins," Seraphina Irons corrected her brother curtly, slapping his hand away when he reached out to take one.

Lorenzo winced mockingly and climbed onto an island bar stool next to where Bianca sat, cleaning up the last of the buttercream from a glass bowl with her finger, and contented himself with battling his sister over the final streaks.

"Is that gingerbread?" Isabella swept into the kitchen, her hair wrapped up in a towel. "Wow, you have been busy."

"She won't let us eat any yet. And she hit me!" Lorenzo pouted.

Isabella gave Seraphina a thumbs up. "Oh, these are so cute! I'm serious, Sephi, you need to start an Instagram for these." She picked up a butterfly cake and adjusted the angle under the light, then took out her phone.

Seraphina waved her hand in dismissal. "My stress bakes always look a bit crap. I bake because it makes me happy and, not to insult your entire lifestyle, but I don't want to have to worry if everything I make is good enough for the validation of strangers on the internet. Again, no offence."

Isabella grimaced. "You're lucky you're my sister," she said, and took a huge bite of the cupcake. "The moving vlog is up, by the way. I finished editing it today."

"You need to decide what you want me to make for when you hit 200,000 subscribers."

"I haven't quite got there yet," Isabella said, her cheeks flushing a soft pink.

"But you will," Bianca said, licking the last of the buttercream from her fingers. "You're in California now."

"Yes and, in California, having 200,000 subscribers is nothing."

"Shut up and eat your cake," Seraphina said as she peered at her gingerbread stars through the oven door.

Isabella hummed in contentment. "You should bring these to school tomorrow, then you won't have to worry about making friends."

"Absolutely not!" Lorenzo scoffed.

"Why not?"

"It might work in small town West Virginia, but in California, people will think that we're dumb, desperate losers."
